At Stormont today, two of our patients, Dr Catherine Thompson and Gail Cairns, shared their experiences of emergency, sight-threatening conditions that were dealt with in practice at Sam Baird Opticians.

They met with Health Minister Mike Nesbitt and Permanent Secretary Mike Farrar. Sam also met with the CEO of the Association of Optometrists as well as MLAs, Ophthalmologists and decision makers at an event organised by Optometry NI.

We continue lobbying for better NHS funding of optician-led services like PEARS which demonstrate the value of community optometry in preventing sight loss and reducing pressure on hospital clinics.

Sam was at Stormont to witness a landmark moment for eyecare in Northern Ireland.

The All Party Group on Visual Impairment (APGVI) has successfully achieved free eyecare (and dental care) for 82% of people on Universal Credit. Around 260,000 vulnerable patients will now be automatically entitled without having to battle complex forms.

This outcome has been years in the making, thanks to the persistence of the APGVI, RNIB, Optometry NI, and support across all political parties. A huge win for fair access to essential care.
