The Hamstrings are the brakes of the human body, and the nervous system is the driver.

With poor intrinsic core strength and stability, as well as a lack of motor control, the Central Nervous System (CNS), interprets forward flexion as a potentially dangerous movement pattern. So in order to protect the body and not to injure the back the CNS tightens up the hamstrings via neurological control as a self protection mechanism.

Most people think that they have 'short' or 'tight' hamstrings, but in reality it is the brains way of saying it is not going to allow the hamstrings to lengthen because fundamentally it doesn't trust you when you bend forward.

This is where most people go wrong......they stretch, foam roll, massage, get their mate/PT to do PNF stretching etc Only for the hamstrings to release a little, then 3 hours later revert back to where they were to begin with. Only to continue that cycle for years!

In the picture above, you can clearly see the difference for this athlete, before and after our session.

If you want to unlock your hamstrings potential DM to find out more 👍

Barbell tempering is one of my favourite tools for clients with forearm or bicep tension.

Since Donnie Thompson has raised this kind of treatment’s profile in the fitness world, it has become more & more popular way of managing tension.

Although methods like this get “bashed” on, there is positive research that this kind of mobilisation, much like foam rolling, provides temporary improvements.

Many focus on the temporary gains and argue that because this practice doesn’t create long-term changes, we shouldn’t use it. But the temporary effects can make it a valuable tool to incorporate into a larger mobility plan.

As with any passive mobility technique, we want to follow it up with active movements to help “lock-in” the mobility changes we get, and this is where the magic really happens.

It’s also a great tool to Empower clients to manage tension in their own soft tissue in between treatments, as demonstrated here by

Other areas that are good for tempering are the pecs, upper trapezius, quads and anterior tibialis.

Give it a go, and let me know how you get on?

What’s the best type of training to reduce sports injuries?

Over the years, i have seen so many athletes place value in stretching or performing yoga to help minimise their risk of injury.

However, as you can see from the chart based on a systematic review that was conducted in 2014, stretching doesn’t really have much effect on reducing injury.

The study also found that a mixture of all of the above plus strength training can reduce injuries by alone reduced sports related injuries by a third and overuse injuries were nearly halved.

If you play sport, make sure you follow a well planned, periodised, purposeful program to support your sport.

Feel free to reach out for help or guidance, either online or in-person options available.

Hi, I’m Iqra Ayubi. I’m a graduate Sports Therapist, with a passion for sports injury prevention, treatment and rehab. I have worked in this field for about a year and a half in men’s semi professional football and women’s football.

I have had a passion for sports since a very young age. Taking part in athletics, netball and football. Whilst doing these sports I sustained a few injuries but never got the right level of help to get me back to playing my best. Now through hard work and dedication, I can give the care that wasn’t offered to me to those that share the same passion of sport as me. Ensuring patients are educated about their injuries/conditions and develop and grow as people and as athletes after each session.
