💊 GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications & Your Pelvic Floor: What You Need to Know 💥
GLP-1 agonists (like Wegovy or Ozempic) have become popular tools for weight loss — but if you’re taking them (or thinking about it), it’s important to understand how they can affect your pelvic floor health.
🔻 The not-so-great news first:
➡️ Muscle Loss: Rapid weight loss, especially without resistance training, can lead to loss of muscle mass — and that includes your pelvic floor muscles. Weaker pelvic muscles can increase your risk of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
➡️ Constipation: A common side effect of GLP-1 medications is constipation. Straining on the toilet puts pressure on the pelvic organs, which can worsen prolapse symptoms and contribute to leakage.
🔺 But there’s good news too:
✅ Reduced Load: Losing excess weight can reduce pressure on your bladder and pelvic organs, helping ease symptoms of stress incontinence and prolapse.
✅ Improved Mobility: Weight loss may also help you move more easily — which can support better engagement with pelvic floor exercises and active self-care.
🎯 Bottom line: If you’re using a GLP-1 medication, pair it with a pelvic floor program to maintain strength and support your long-term pelvic health.
