Personality traits

Research has shown that people who exhibit the traits below are also more susceptible to chronic pain, chronic fatigue, anxiety and autoimmune disease.

From my experience as a Somatic Coach, and many years of my own inner work, I have observed that these traits are often formed in childhood to keep us safe and therefore contributed to the nervous system being disregulated as an adult.

Part of regulation work can be becoming more aware when you are exhibiting these traits in yourself and showing kindness to these parts that were formed to protect you.

As a starting point, daily regulation practices are always helpful. I have a free guide of tips for anyone that would like a copy. Comment regulate below for a copy.

Regulation

Following my recent post covering fight, flight, freeze and fawn, some of you asked for methods to come into the ‘rest and digest’ nervous system state.

What is your go to method? Mine is meditation, breathework and Yin Yoga.

For more tips, comment ‘regulate’ and I will send you my free guide.

I can’t take credit for the image but wanted to share as found the explanations help.

I was in flight for many years and wished I had known more about the nervous system back then.

What survival responses resonates with you?

It takes gentle consistent practices for your nervous system to experience safety - I have a free guide of regulation tips as a starting point. Comment ‘regulate’ for a copy.

‘I am worried because the perfectionist voice in my head has gone quiet, this is really strange! Yet I feel so alive and energised - I have never slept so well either!’

This is what my client said to me yesterday following somatic coaching sessions. This is what regulation looks like, the negative voice lessens and the fatigue lifts. He actually said it was like a light had been switched on.

Its funny, but regulation can feel strange when you are not used to it, and there can be fear that it won’t last - however this is the time to keep building on those coping mechanisms so they are available if there is a relapse.

This is agency and empowerment, knowing that you are now in the driver seat and not your mind. Want to have a chat about how somatic coaching can help you? Reach out or book a free session via my website, link in BIO

Understanding your nervous system states can help to remove some of the fear of symptoms that follow, eg anxiety, chronic pain and fatigue. The fear itself can leave you in a cycle that seems never-ending.

Tuning into your body and tracking your state can provide control over how you flow into a calmer more connected state (ventral vagal). The image provides a few tips and I also have a free guide with more techniques. Reach out or comment ‘Regulate’ for a free copy.

There is a way out of the cycle of fear 💚

Sitting quietly with yourself isn’t about fixing, figuring out, or becoming someone better. It’s about listening.

When you pause and remove the noise—no phone, no productivity, no performing—you begin to notice what’s actually happening inside you. Sensations. Emotions. Subtle truths that don’t shout, but whisper.

Here’s what quietly sitting with yourself can offer:

• Nervous system regulation – Stillness signals safety. Your body softens. Your breath deepens.
• Emotional clarity – Feelings that have been pushed down finally have space to move and settle.
• Self-trust – The more you listen inwardly, the less you outsource your knowing.
• Embodiment – You come home to your body instead of living in your head.
• Alignment – Decisions begin to feel clearer because they arise from within, not from pressure.

At first, it can feel uncomfortable. Silence often brings us face-to-face with what we’ve been avoiding. But discomfort is not danger—it’s an invitation.

You don’t need hours. Start with two minutes. Sit. Feel your feet. Notice your breath. Let whatever is there be there.

In a world that rewards constant doing, sitting quietly with yourself is a radical act of self-connection.

And from that connection, everything else becomes more honest, more grounded, more you.

Are we normalising feeling unwell?

We laugh about being super busy

We push through headaches, tension, gut issues, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia…

We tell ourselves that this is just how life is.

But it really isn’t normal, it’s how our bodies have adapted to a constant barrage of doing.

It’s the result of living in a world that asks us to be constantly available, productive and composed.

I’ve been there and tbh can easily fall back into the patterns of always doing 😫

What I’ve realised is that feeling well should be the norm and creating balance is the most important thing I can do for my mind and body.

How do you find balance amongst the busyness?

If you live with chronic pain, anxiety or fatigue, this matters 👇

It’s not a mindset problem.

And it’s not because you’re failing to “relax.”

Your nervous system may be stuck in survival mode.

The vagus nerve is your body’s main calming pathway.

When it’s underactive, the body stays tense → pain lingers, anxiety spikes, sleep suffers.

Here’s the key most people miss:

80% of calming signals go from the body to the brain.

You can’t think your way out of pain.

The body has to feel safe

I often wondered why some people are more prone to inflammation and hormone disruption.

Often it is a direct result of how our nervous system perceives threat and the messages it sends to the brain, which in return sends signals back to the body in the form of inflammation, pain and hormone disruption.

Regulating the nervous system can help with menopause symptoms; chronic pain; digestive issues; weight loss and improved sleep.

Once I learnt this, a lot made sense, especially the difficult time I had during peri-menopause. I wish I had known then what I know now! This is why I love guiding and teaching others, so I can see others go from surviving to thriving too 💚

A disregulated nervous system can present itself in many ways in the body, including hormone inbalance; fatigue; autoimmune illnesses; skin conditions; pain and many more symptoms.

Our fast paced lives means we are not allowing our bodies to heal. No wonder over 50% of people now have at least one chronic illness.

Yet a daily consistent regulation practice can make all the difference AND helps you build capacity for life’s ups and downs. Here are a few of my favourites:-

🌟Stop and take 5 x deep belly breathes every 60-90 mins in your day.

🌟Notice where you are holding tension in your body and release - shoulders, jaw, hands, toes (strange one I know but I often clench my toes!).

🌟Stand up and swing your arms from side to side.

🌟Look out your window and notice something that makes you smile (for me it is seeing new buds on the trees).

It’s the simple things, done consistently that really work. Check out my website link in BIO for free resources.

What works for you?

A disregulated nervous system can cause many physical symptoms.

If you are experiencing chronic pain, illness or anxiety then daily self regulation practices can really help:-

Humming

Mindfulness

Meditation

Yoga

Walking in nature

Tapping

To name but a few…

I know from experience that they have helped me and many others that I have coached.

For some people more in-depth work maybe needed with a practitioner that specialises in mind/body connection.

You can get free resources from my website, see BIO for link.
