The dandelion is a unique flower that symbolizes the sun, moon, and stars. The yellow part of the flower represents the sun, the puffball is a symbol of the moon, and the dispersing seeds resemble stars. The dandelion opens in the morning and closes in the evening.

Every part of the dandelion plant is useful, including its root, leaves, and flower, which can be utilized for food, medicine, and dyeing purposes. Until the 1800s, people used to remove grass from their lawns to make room for dandelions and other beneficial "weeds" like chickweed, malva, and chamomile. The word "dandelion" comes from the French word "dent de lion," meaning lion’s tooth, and they have one of the longest flowering seasons among all plants. Dandelion seeds can travel up to five miles from their origin, and animals such as birds, insects, and butterflies consume the nectar or seeds of the dandelion.

Dandelion flowers do not need pollination to produce seeds. They were known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years. In folk medicine, dandelions are used to treat infections and liver disorders. Dandelion tea works as a diuretic.

Dandelions are among the most successful plants in existence, surviving worldwide. Every year, countries spend millions of dollars on lawn pesticides to maintain uniform lawns of non-native grasses, and 30% of the country's water supply is used to keep them green.

How quickly the wild edges are engulfing the compost loo! It has been somewhat neglected since spring. Yesterday, I began the process of gently clearing it, getting it ready for our re-launch next spring. πŸ’šπŸ’š
