Here is your lifestyle medicine prescription for your self-confidence.

Lifestyle medicine is becoming increasingly more important. Soon when you leave the doctor's your prescription will also contain some guidelines to follow for a better healthier life.

Lack of confidence and low self-esteem can affect you in many ways. It can be brought on by bereavement, serious illness or stress all impacting self-esteem.

You might have low confidence now because of what happened when you were growing up, but we can grow and develop new ways of seeing ourselves at any age. Personality can also play a part. Some people are just more prone to negative thinking, while others set impossibly high standards for themselves.

Are you feeling as confident as you could be?

There is a real reason that you might not be. We are talking to lots of women that feel that their self-confidence has faded away, and this can have a real impact on their overall quality of life.

During your menopause transition, it is common for you to feel depression and loss of self-esteem. It’s often referred to as “midlife”. Where things are no longer as they used to be. You feel internally and externally to have changed.

These changes can “rock our boat” and brings a whole load of responses.
Some of which are due to hormonal swings. But others can manifest as a loss of confidence and low self-esteem and, maybe, emotional instability (feeling of depression, anxiety, low confidence and a generally low mood).

This month we are looking at confidence and losing self-esteem. We will discuss why this might be. We will be giving you tips and techniques to help you lessen your negative feelings and turn around your self-confidence 🤩🤩!

Life can be a real roller coaster. It's quite normal to feel fine one day and not the next.

If you find yourself crying during that episode of Call the Midwife, (or dare we say Death In Paradise!), or shouting at the red light when you're late for a meeting, you are definitely not alone.

Just because it's "normal" doesn't mean it is easy.

People around you, in your family, have noticed. They are aware that you are not feeling yourself. Your mood is fluctuating and you are feeling more anxiety than usual. There is no need to hide your feelings away.

Peaks and troughs in our moods are normal but can feel difficult sometimes. Talking about it, normalising it, will help.

Mental health and well-being is important. The medicine of lifestyle can work and at times work better than conventional medicines. For example, a regular practice of mindfulness, or walking in nature can significantly lower levels of anxiety.

We can help.
We can create a tailored service for you and your situation.

We would appreciate your help too. What can we do to give you the support structure you need? Would you like a Facebook Group? A place online you can swap stories and tips and hints? Would you like to see more videos on practical help? Would you like a virtual evening meet-up?

Comment below. We are here to help you. Or email Sharon@flourish.uk and ask to be added to our mailing list. So you get many more helpful tips, to get you through.

Warm light is much better for us than blue light. Why?

Warm light has much longer wavelengths. It has much less power than blue light. The reason for this is warm light delivers heat.

Causes less eye damage than the shorter blue light. It also has a soothing effect on our brains.

The advice is to shut down phones and tablets about 90 minutes before you go to bed. This helps minimise the effects of blue light on our eyes and brains.

You can also further reduce this by looking at the setting on your devices. Changing the setting from cool light to warm light. When set up most phones, tablets and PCs will do this automatically for you so you don't have to remember.

Follow the link below to see how to change the settings on your phone. This will help to protect your eyes and help you sleep better.

We have been talking a lot about sleep. A huge factor causing poor sleep is blue light.

When you are experiencing menopausal symptoms sleep can be elusive.

One of the biggest steps you can take right now (to a better night's sleep) is reducing exposure. Especially before bed.

But what is blue light? and why does it affect us so badly?

Sunlight is made up of many different colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Blue light is the shortest and highest energy wavelength. This leads to eye strain and eye disease. As this is the most powerful light band emitted from the sun, it also affects our brains. It's the light wave that tells us to wake up, get going.

It's also the only wave of light emitted from our phones and tablets.

So right when we should be winding down, relaxing. If we use our phones before we sleep, we are pumping our brains with signals to wake up get going.

In one study, as little as 2 hours of exposure to blue light at night slowed or stopped the release of the sleep hormone melatonin. Melatonin is essential for great sleep.

Try it tonight. Ideally, power down your devices 90 minutes before bedtime. See how you feel in the morning.
