Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterised by repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. The severity and duration of attacks can vary, and they are often triggered by environmental factors such as allergens, cold air, or emotional stress.
From a general medical point of view, asthma occurs due to airway inflammation and narrowing that make breathing difficult. Among the various presentations, some patients experience symptoms that worsen in cold weather or after exposure to cold air. These patients often report coughing with clear, thin phlegm, a sensation of cold in the chest, and difficulty breathing that improves with warmth. This pattern is commonly referred to as cold-wheezing syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In TCM, cold wheezing syndrome is mainly caused by the invasion of wind-cold pathogens that obstruct the Lung’s ability to disperse and descend qi, leading to retention of cold-phlegm in the airways. When cold enters the body, it constricts the Lung and causes body fluids to accumulate, forming phlegm that blocks the qi movement and triggers wheezing. Typical symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing with thin white sputum, chest tightness, chills without sweating, and a preference for warmth. TCM treatment focuses on dispersing wind cold, warming the Lung, transforming phlegm, and calming wheezing.
From a lifestyle perspective, it is important to keep warm, avoid cold air exposure, and limit intake of raw, cold, or dairy foods that promote phlegm formation. Oh and get booking in for acupuncture!
Warm soups with ginger or cinnamon can support Lung function and dispel internal cold. Gentle exercises like Tai Chi and Qi Gong help regulate breathing and strengthen the body.
