“Why’s the receptionist asking me what’s up?!” 🤔

We get it… sometimes it can feel a bit nosy when our reception team ask what you need your appointment for. You might be thinking, “Eh? I just wanna see the doctor!” 😅

But honestly, there’s a good reason for it 👇

💙 They’re not being nosey – they’re helping you get the right care
Our receptionists are trained to make sure you’re seen by the right person. Not everything needs a GP – sometimes a nurse, pharmacist, or even a quick phone call can sort you much quicker.

⏱️ It helps you get seen sooner
If we know what’s going on, we can often get you to the best person faster instead of you waiting longer than you need to.

📞 Some things can be sorted there and then
Prescriptions, test results, sick notes – our team might be able to help you straight away without you needing an appointment at all.

🔒 It’s always confidential
Anything you tell our reception team is treated with the same confidentiality as speaking to a doctor. No gossip here, promise 🤐

We know it can feel a bit strange, but our reception team are on your side – they’re here to help, not to interrogate you like you’re on Crimewatch 😄

So next time they ask, just give them a little clue – it’ll help us look after you better 💙

Your health, sorted the Greaty way 👍

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌱

Today is Earth Day—a chance to look after the planet we all call home 💚

At Great Homer Street Medical Centre, we know that a healthy environment = healthier people. Cleaner air, greener spaces, and less waste all play a big part in keeping our community well.

You don’t have to do anything massive to make a difference—small changes add up:

🚶 Walk or wheel instead of driving when you can

🛍️ Bring a reusable bag when you’re out and about

💧 Turn off taps and save water where possible

♻️ Recycle what you can

🌳 Enjoy your local green spaces (Everton Park is right on our doorstep!)

Even a little helps—and if we all chip in, it makes a big difference 🌿

Looking after the planet is also looking after our health—cleaner air can help reduce breathing problems, and getting outdoors is great for both body and mind.

So go on… get outside if you can, enjoy a bit of fresh air (pollen permitting! 😄), and do one small thing for the Earth today 🌍💚

🌼 Allergy Awareness – It’s That Time of Year! 🌼

Spring has sprung… and so have the sneezes 🤧🌸

For many of us, this time of year means hay fever—itchy eyes, runny noses, and constant sneezing thanks to pollen in the air. But allergies aren’t just a seasonal nuisance—they can affect people all year round and sometimes be much more serious.

Common allergies include:

🌿 Pollen (hay fever)

🐶 Animal fur or dander

🏠 Dust mites

🍓 Food allergies (e.g. nuts, dairy, shellfish)

💊 Medication allergies

For some people, allergies can be severe and even life-threatening (known as anaphylaxis), which is why awareness really matters.

Top tips to manage spring allergies:

Keep windows closed on high pollen days

Shower and change clothes after being outdoors

Use antihistamines or sprays (ask us or your pharmacist for advice)

Check the daily pollen forecast

When to seek help:

Symptoms aren’t controlled with over-the-counter treatments

You’re unsure what’s causing your reaction

You have swelling, difficulty breathing, or feel faint (call 999 in an emergency)

💛 Not all allergies are visible—and for some, they can impact daily life in a big way. A bit of understanding goes a long way.

If you’re struggling with allergies, get in touch with the practice—we’re here to help you breathe a little easier this spring 🌿

🤯 Weird Fact Wednesday 🤯

Your body is basically a night shift worker… because it does most of its repair work while you’re asleep 😴

While you’re snoring away, your brain is tidying up waste, your muscles are repairing themselves, and your immune system is getting on with “maintenance mode” like it’s got a checklist to finish before morning ☑️

So yes… technically, sleeping is just your body switching itself off and back on again to try and sort you out 😂

If you’re struggling with sleep or feeling constantly run down, don’t just battle on—get in touch with us 💙

💛 MS Awareness Week 💛

This week is MS Awareness Week, a time to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and support those living with the condition.

MS is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It can impact how people move, feel, and think—but it looks different for everyone. Some people live with mild symptoms, while others may face more significant challenges.

Common symptoms can include:

Fatigue

Problems with balance or walking

Numbness or tingling

Muscle stiffness or spasms

Vision problems

Living with MS isn’t always easy, but with the right support, treatment, and understanding, people can still live full and active lives 💪

If you or someone you know is experiencing ongoing symptoms or has concerns, please don’t ignore them—get in touch with us. We’re here to help.

This week is also about kindness and understanding—MS isn’t always visible, so a little patience and support can make a big difference 💙

🌟 Happy First Official Practice Manager Day! 🌟

Today we’re celebrating our amazing Practice Manager, Eileen 💙

Behind the scenes, Eileen keeps everything running smoothly—supporting staff, solving problems, juggling a million things at once, and always making sure our patients get the best possible care. It’s not an easy job (and definitely not a quiet one!), but she does it with dedication, strength, and a good sense of humour when it’s needed most.

From keeping the practice organised, to supporting the team on even the busiest days, Eileen plays a huge part in everything we do here at Great Homer Street Medical Centre.

So today, we just want to say a big thank you 👏
We truly appreciate everything you do for the practice, the team, and our patients.

Happy Practice Manager Day, Eileen – we’d be lost without you! 💐

💙 Health Inequalities in Everton – Let’s Talk About It 💙

Living in Everton is something to be proud of – strong community, proper spirit, and people who look out for each other ❤️

But we also know that people in our area can face bigger health challenges than in other parts of the country.

👉 On average, people in more deprived areas like ours can:

Develop long-term conditions younger

Have higher rates of things like heart disease, diabetes, and lung conditions

Find it harder to access support, appointments, or healthy options

That’s what we mean by health inequalities – it’s not about choice, it’s about circumstances.

Things like: 🏠 Housing
💷 Income
🍎 Access to healthy food
🧠 Mental health support
🚶 Safe places to exercise

All play a massive part in our health.

But here’s the important bit… we’re working on it – together.

At your GP surgery, we’re here to: ✅ Help you get the care you need
✅ Link you in with local support
✅ Offer checks, screenings, and advice
✅ Support you with both physical and mental health

And locally, there are some brilliant groups doing boss work supporting our community every day.

💬 If you’re struggling – whether it’s your health, money worries, housing, or just feeling overwhelmed – you’re not on your own. Reach out.

Because in Everton, we don’t just get by…
we look after our own. 💙

🌤️ BBQ season is nearly upon us… apparently!

You know the drill in Liverpool – one minute it’s coats on, next minute it’s “get the BBQ out, la!” before the rain comes back 10 minutes later 😂

If you do manage to catch that rare bit of sunshine, here’s your friendly reminder to BBQ safely:

🔥 Don’t rush the cooking – if it’s still mooing, clucking or oinking… it’s not ready! Make sure meat is cooked right through (no pink chicken please, we beg 😅)

🧼 Wash them hands – before and after handling raw meat. No one wants a side of food poisoning with their burger.

🥗 Keep it separate – raw meat and salads are not mates. Different plates, different utensils.

❄️ Keep food chilled – especially in this “is it hot or not?” weather we get. If it’s been sat out all day… give it a miss.

🍻 And steady on with the bevvies – enjoy yourself, but don’t forget to stay hydrated (yes, water counts too!).

Most importantly… enjoy it while it lasts, because we all know the rain’s probably just round the corner ☔😂

Stay safe, stay fed, and have a boss BBQ from all of us at the surgery 💙
