Childhood trauma can be caused by events such as car accidents, witnessing or being the victim of violence or bullying. However, it is often caused by the more subtle cumulative effect of day-to-day experiences and the drip-drip effect of small insults to a person's sense of self such as through inconsistent support, connection with others, instability and unpredictability. These subtle and repeated experiences, where a child's emotional needs were not consistently or adequately met, can often lead to changes in the child's ability to cope and negatively impact beliefs they develop about themselves and others. This process often carries on into adulthood and can result in chronic issues with stress, lack of confidence, issues with anxiety and problems in relationships.
Psychological interventions such as schema informed therapy can help identify problematic patterns of thinking and behaving.
Therapy can often help modify these patterns, increasing a person's resilience and ability to cope.
