Making a Full and Swift Recovery From an Ankle Sports Injury

A 23-year-old professional rugby player suffered a high-grade syndesmosis (high ankle sprain) during a match. Initial non-operative treatment failed, and he couldn’t progress with training.

The syndesmosis is a group of ligaments that hold the tibia and fibula together at the ankle. The front ligament (AITFL) is often torn when the ankle rolls (inversion injury).

Minor syndesmosis injuries can be treated with a boot and physiotherapy. High-grade tears, however, often cause ongoing pain, instability, and difficulty returning to sport. His MRI showed a complete tear of the front syndesmosis ligament.

He underwent keyhole ankle surgery to assess the joint, clear inflammation, and reconstruct the ligament using a synthetic Tightrope device. This is done through two 2 cm incisions; a metal button on each side of the ankle is linked by strong material and tightened to restore stability.

By 6 weeks, he was ready to return to full training. This minimally invasive procedure is highly effective and allows a rapid return to full activity after a severe syndesmosis injury.
