St Joseph's Hospice (or Jospice) was founded in 1962 by Father Francis O’Leary, while working as a young priest in Pakistan. It is the oldest and largest hospice on Merseyside and has been providing palliative and end of life care for adult patients from across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and West Lancashire for more than 40 years. We are a registered charity and our specialist nursing teams care for over 200 people with a wide range of conditions every year. We also care for and support our patients’ families and carers. We have 29 patient rooms and are fortunate to be located in a beautiful setting within a conservation area and 12 acres of natural woodland. We do not charge for our care and rely on our local communities to continue to support the hospice. Around two-thirds of our funding comes from charitable giving, including donations, fundraising and legacies.

We were delighted to welcome Sefton Central MP, Bill Esterson MP , to St Joseph’s Hospice recently 💚

During his visit, our chief executive, Mike Parr, and members of our leadership team gave Bill a tour of our newly upgraded facilities – all made possible thanks to £200,000 of Government capital funding.

The improvements include vital repairs to the 100-year-old roof, new therapeutic bathrooms, LED lighting to reduce energy costs, and beautiful outdoor garden pods with accessible pathways for patients and families to enjoy all year round.

Sustainability was a key theme of the visit, as we continue working hard to ensure the hospice can care for local people and their families for generations to come.

Thank you to Bill for taking the time to visit and for his continued support for hospice care across Sefton.

The Mangan family’s connection to St Joseph’s Hospice goes back almost 50 years.

In 1975, Mary Mangan became one of our very first patients. Her nine children and their families spent so much time here that the hospice quickly became an extension of their own family.

That bond has passed through the generations. Mary’s grandson Joe and his wife Pat were tireless fundraisers, organising much-loved “Jospice Nights” with entertainers like Les Dennis. Their granddaughter Li grew up coming to garden parties, swimming in our hydrotherapy pool with her grandad, and volunteering her time.

Today, Li continues that tradition. A talented photographer, she now has her work displayed at the hospice — alongside a photo of her great-grandmother Mary on our 50th anniversary timeline.

For the Mangans, the hospice has always been more than a place of care. It has been a place of community, fun, and treasured family memories across five generations. 💚
