When I'm working with patients, most of the time the main goal is to get the patient back to living their life with more vigour, whether that be by reducing pain, increasing mobility or increasing confidence with movement.
🏁
A secondary goal of mine is to give all patients some tools to strengthen the problem area up and prevent further problems from developing. The best way to do this is with corrective exercises. I am going to be posting a series of low back pain exercises that I give patients once I believe they are ready to perform them. These exercises are given only after a full examination has been conducted and I can be sure that they will cause no further injury.

Today's exercise is the dead bug. This is a great exercise because it looks simple enough but is very challenging when performed correctly. This exercise will help to activate the muscles within the low back that help to stabilise during movement, and help to create a more stable and injury-resistant spine.

1. Lie on your back with your hips and knees bent at 90 degrees and your shoulders at 90 degrees.
2. Brace your core to ensure your muscles are active, and slowly lower one leg and the opposite arm until they are hovering above the floor.
3. Return the arm and leg to the starting position and repeat on the other side.
4. Repeat this whole process 5-10 home on each side, and perform three sets of this every day.

The key with this movement is to perform it slowly and carefully, ensuring to keep as still as possible in your torso and allow only your arm and leg to move.

Enjoy! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
