Penny Lane Surgery

Penny Lane Surgery Our wide range of services ensures personalised care at every stage of life. You can also call NHS 111. Listing shall not be taken as endorsement of any kind.

We are an NHS GP practice serving over 6,000 patients in Wavertree and Childwall, delivering first-class, patient-centred care from our historic Penny Lane premises. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, how you contact us will be different at the moment. This is to limit face-to-face contact whenever possible and help stop the spread of coronavirus. We are open and if you need to see your GP, please visit our website www.pennylanesurgery.nhs.uk to complete an e-consultation. If your query is urgent or you are unable to complete an e-consultation, please ring us on 0151 733 2800. Please be aware that you may be asked to call us back after 1pm if our morning appointments have been booked. Face-to-face appointments are available to all patients, but you may be asked to discuss your conditions over the phone or online first to assess what would be most appropriate for you. Please do not come to the surgery unless you have an appointment. If you are asked to come into the surgery for a face-to-face appointment, please remember to wear a face covering. Measures are in place to keep you safe from infection during your visit to the surgery. Pancreatic cancer is hard to diagnose and difficult to treat, so early detection can help save lives.

But most people can’t name the symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Can you?

Someone with pancreatic cancer may not have all the symptoms listed here, as they vary for each person, but if you know the symptoms, there's a better chance you, or someone close to you, will be diagnosed early enough for treatment.

🦴 Today is World Osteoporosis Day! 🌍
Did you know?

πŸ‘‰ 1 in 3 women over 50
πŸ‘‰ 1 in 5 men over 50
…will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetime.

In fact, in women, these fractures are more common than breast cancer.

πŸ’ͺ Here’s how to protect your bones:

πŸ₯¦ Eat for bone health
A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, and protein helps keep your bones strong.

πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ Move your bones
Targeted exercise (like walking, lifting weights, or climbing stairs) improves bone strength, posture, and balance.

🚭 Avoid bone-damaging habits
Quit smoking and reduce alcohol – both are major risk factors for bone loss.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Prevent falls and fractures
Assess your home for fall risks and make necessary safety changes to avoid injuries.

This October, let’s commit to stronger bones and a healthier future.
Walk, run, lift, climb - keep your bones moving!

Quitting Smoking for Stoptober? Visit https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking/ for free support and advice.

What happens when you quit?
The sooner you quit, the sooner you'll notice changes to your body and health. Look at what happens when you quit for good.

After 20 minutes
Check your pulse rate, it will already be starting to return to normal.

After 8 hours
Your oxygen levels are recovering, and the harmful carbon monoxide level in your blood will have reduced by half.

After 48 hours
Your carbon monoxide levels have dropped to that of a non-smoker. Your lungs are clearing out mucus and your senses of taste and smell are improving.

After 72 hours
If you notice that breathing feels easier, it's because your bronchial tubes have started to relax. Also your energy will be increasing.

After 2 to 12 weeks
Blood will be pumping through to your heart and muscles much better because your circulation will have improved.

After 3 to 9 months
Any coughs, wheezing or breathing problems will be improving as your lung function increases by up to 10%.

After 1 year
Great news! Your risk of heart attack will have halved compared with a smoker's.

After 10 years
More great news! Your risk of death from lung cancer will have halved compared with a smoker's.

Let's quit smoking together.
