đź”´Notice for families with graves in Thornton.
After careful consideration, the service has decided that New graves on section R at Thornton Cemetery are now only going to be for a maximum of 2 people. This is due to water logging issues we are having around the site passed 6ft in depth. This is partially due to having the wettest winter on record so far as well as drainage issues in various places.
We are looking at ways we can stem this problem, however large investment is required to improve the drainage systems on this section which will take time to secure and implement for the service. Rather than cease burials altogether on this section it is best to limit the depths on the section to ensure we can bury the deceased with dignity and respect without encountering water problems in graves.
If any families would like a grave for more than two people we will be making alternative arrangements on a new section of the site in the near future to be ready the summer 2024.
If you have any families with pre-purchased graves on this section we will where possible honour this depth however must stress that on occasions we may not be able to meet their requirements deeper that 6ft due to the issues described. Or if families wish to move their pre-purchased grave we will more than happy to move the grave to a new location without any extra costs incurred. (We will require all paperwork to be returned to the office for us to make these changes).
This will now take effect from today, thank you all for your understanding and assistance with this and as always if any of you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact myself or the office. 01519245143.
