Another study suggesting the more a horse is relaxed the more it is likely to learn. It may be obvious but not everyone puts the work in to the basics. There generally is always a reason horses do something.
The study only reinforces how safe desensitisation of external factors will set your horse up for the long e.g. pastic bags make a horse much more engaged and relaxed. Rather than a horse that is a hundred miles an hour and scared of its own shadow. A horse that is more relaxed will not only learn more it is more likely to stay calm during a dressage test and less likely to p**s off with you when your eventing.
Take the time to show your horse the world and everything around it and they will pay you back a million times over or they just won't chuck you off π
Repetition and Consistency is Key π
The more relaxed a horse is the better it is at learning new tasks, a study by equine scientists at Nottingham Trent University found.

Stabling π΄
Everyday I treat horses in stables and it got me thinking about are they actually happy in their stable? Obviously we all know horses should be out in the field and its natural. So are stables good for horses? When we look at horses for what they are then the answer is No. Stables are made to suit humans not horses. Horses were around before domestication and will probably be around after as well, feral horses thrive without us.
The debate will always rage on but the fact of the matter is stables suit are convenience not the horses. Horses are highly social creatures, they are herd animals and research shows they do not do well alone. They like to forage and be free and be in control what is coming around the corner. Think about it, they are sensitive animals and not being able to see out in the open for predators could be pretty scary. On the flip side of this some horses have been conditioned to almost benefit from stabling around our lives and some owners would say they prefer the stable. Isolation and confinement suppress natural instincts to forage, make friends and be free, which the research shows they also make horses susceptible to more ailments and issues.
There are plenty of positives and negatives for both and that is up to owners to decide. As a physiotherapist movement and freedom to express natural behaviour is key to a healthy life and to prevent many unwanted musculoskeletal conditions. This is somewhat the elephant in the room for many horses, the turn out and stabling.
Please feel free to debate this as it can be a touchy subject and remember there is always a sensible answer for both opinions! Remember it is a privilege to own a horse and not a right which people tend to forget
Be Nice! π

Progress ππππ
Just a quick one for everyone, I have a couple of hundred dogs and horses on my books at the minute and it can be so difficult to personally send a message to every person to check on their progress. I want everyone to feel welcome to send me a message or a progress report whenever they feel like. I love being kept upto date with everyones progress no matter how small or big π²

Lovely first few days back at it after the Christmas break. Alot busier than usual for a January and plenty of lovely new clients too! The only downside is the rain has caused a few horses to float away into the Mersey π€£.
Added a few complex rehabilitation cases to my books, the key is time and patience for alot of the bigger injuries. Please do not get ahead of yourself when it comes to rehabilitation, controlled overload is key but too much too soon can be detrimental.
Bring on Spring π

My first qualification was a BTEC in Animal Management at Myerscough College. I then progressed onto a degree in Zoology/Animal Behaviour BSc (Hons) from Liverpool John Moore's University. I finally qualified with a post-graduate degree as a Veterinary Physiotherapist from Canine and Equine Physiotherapy Training (CEPT) through Middlesex University. I have also recently qualified as a clinical provider to take on Vet Physio students for work experience, while I will be hopefully adding a MSc to this in the very near future.
I have a range of experience working with different animals in veterinary surgeries, kennels and stables. As I am a member of IRVAP so I have a duty of care to be always be developing myself through CPD days and promoting safe practice and knowledge. I will also be applying for the RAMP register in the coming months.
I established Whites Veterinary Physiotherapy in July 2017 along with the help of my family. Since I have established I have come a very long way improving myself and my work everyday thanks to the help of all my clients, I try to keep my prices low and give the best possible service around, I am rated as a 5 star vet physio and I treat all my clients and their animals as my friends.
Recently I have been employed by the University of Warwickshire lecturing to Veterinary Physiotherapy BSc students once a week, which I thoroughly enjoy being able to give my best to the next set of Vet Physios coming through, which not only is the best environment for the students but it is also the best environment for myself to work with other veterinary professionals and improve my skills which only in turn benefits my clients.
As of June 2019 I have also started to regularly hold vet physio talks at liveries around the North West to help owners improve the overall mental and physical wellbeing on their horses. While I have also started to offer regular pole & jumping clinics based around fitness, fun and conditioning.
Feel free to send me a message, no matter how small or big it is, I love a good chat!
