The latest edition of Reach Out is here! Catch us on LCR 106.7FM every Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 10am.

Our amazing members present the show, working hard to prepare and practise interviews that prove we’re just like everyone else – with voices worth hearing.

This month’s highlights:
✨ Racheal Roy chats with Dr Simon Abrams (Anfield & Everton PCN) about the LungEVity campaign and their lung screening programme.
✨ Kevin talks with Ronnie about her role as a union convener and how she supports people at work.
✨ Lewis rounds things off with Louise, diving into all things Zumba!

It’s a brilliant listen – make a cuppa, sit back and enjoy.

Recently, members of Mencap Liverpool & Sefton successfully completed the Oliver McGowan Tier 2 Learning Disability Co-Trainer training. This intensive 3-day programme took hard work and commitment, and we’re so proud of our members who are now part of a national pool of co-trainers supported by Mencap who are going out and co-delivering the morning session.

Our very own Ste Leigh co-delivered his first session with Tracey Richards – and he absolutely smashed it! Tracey shared: “Steve was brilliant – on time, polite, and gave a fantastic presentation. The delegates were really impressed with Steve.”

Ste himself said: “I really enjoyed it. I did a great job and worked well with Tracey.”

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is so important and we want to ensure people understand that people with a learning disability and/or autism are people first.

By co-delivering this training, Ste is helping to change attitudes and make a real difference.

This week at Thursday Club we were led by the amazing Louise!

Louise runs our weekly Zumba Gold session every Wednesday at 1.30pm at the Mencap Community Cottage and recently joined us on our radio show Reach Out on LCR 106.7FM to share more about her classes.

We had a fantastic evening dancing to some of our favourite tunes, before winding down with relaxation – including soothing temple massages for those who wanted to really chill out.

A huge thank you to Louise for such a brilliant evening, and to our incredible volunteers who make every session run so smoothly. We couldn’t do it without you!

On Monday, our members delivered the first Learning Disability Awareness Training session of the 2025/26 academic year to Year 4 student doctors at the University of Liverpool

The session was led by our fantastic trainers Adam, Lewis, Kyle, and Racheal, alongside Hilary Harper, Learning Disability Healthcare Facilitator at Mersey Care , and Katrina Skinner, a student nurse on placement with the Learning Disability Team at Mersey Care. The programme was supported and coordinated by Dr Fiona Greeley, MBChB Year 3 Assessment Lead, Theme Lead for Disability and Care in the Community, Community Clinical Teacher, and Senior Clinical Lecturer.

Our trainers are highly skilled at bringing this training to life. One of the most valuable parts for the students is the breakout sessions, where they get to know each of our members and share what they’ve learned about each of our trainers with the wider group. This activity highlights the common ground we share and showcases the wide range of skills, talents, and life experiences that people with a learning disability bring. Importantly, it also helps future doctors understand that sometimes we may say “yes” without fully understanding a question, and shows them simple ways they can check our understanding and make us feel included.

We also share with the students some of the stark facts about the health inequalities faced by people with a learning disability:

- Women with a learning disability are likely to die 26 years earlier than women without a learning disability.

- People with a learning disability are twice as likely to die from a preventable cause.

-Around 90% of people with a learning disability have a communication disability, making health experiences more challenging—and in some cases, leading to death.

This is why our members deliver this training. It is essential that every new cohort of student doctors hears our message so that, as qualified professionals, they better understand learning disability and can play their part in tackling these inequalities.

A huge well done to Adam, Lewis, Kyle, and Racheal—your voices are making a real difference

Welcome back Thursday Club 🤩

With our summer break officially over our members really enjoyed coming back to the cottage for our Thursday night members social.

We had the fabulous Zulay and Keith from Origami pulse running a session for our member to create their own orgami hearts to be added to a special art piece coming soon 🖼️🫶💕🎨

It was great to see everyone and have a catch up with a nice cuppa and of course a custard cream 😋

Thank you to our members and volunteers for making it great night!

A productive morning at our community Garden Drop In despite the constant interruptions
from heavy showers! 🏡🪏👨‍🌾☔

Ken, James and Steve kept on top of the weeds and did a lot of pruning.

Dan, Paul H and new member Patrick learned how to propogate geraniums
from cuttings as well as scarifying the back lawn ready for re-seeding
the bare patches next week!

Andy tidied up all the borders while Emily and Anne took lots of
Rosemary cuttings and planted them up in pots. 🪏🌿

Special mention to Anne who brought along a lovely set of home-made
"Thank You" cards for everyone along with a big bag of Gummy Bears! Thank you Anne! 🥰

Today was recording day for our Reach Out radio show – and what a brilliant afternoon it was!

Everyone arrived early for a final practice, and even though Sue and Tony weren’t interviewing this time, they still came along to support their teammates by role-playing and rehearsing. That’s true teamwork in action

Kevin was up first, interviewing Ronnie from the GMB union. We learnt lots but one thing that struck me was that you can join a union even if you’re not in work, and they can support you with things like PIP assessments (as long as you’ve been a member for 3+ months).

Next, Lewis interviewed Louise, who runs Zumba at Mencap Community Cottage. It was a great interview and we learned some new facts about Louise… plus a very funny story shared along the way!

Finally, Racheal spoke to Dr Simon Abrams about the Lungevity Campaign – which is about going for your Lung Screening.  Spoiler alert the screening iss simply a 20-minute phone consultation with a nurse.  Once you’ve answered these questions she will assess if you need to go for a CT Scan at the mobile screening unit which will be at Walton Asda. When detected early enough Cancers have really good rates of survival and attending your screenings are so important to catch cancer early.

All these interviews will be broadcast in our September and October shows – and we can’t wait for you to hear them!

Huge thanks to our incredible Outreach Champions for their hard work, to our amazing guests for sharing their time and stories and the team at LCR 106.7fm

Our Outreach Champions have been absolutely incredible today - everyone has been working so hard and achieved so much – I can’t stress how much we thank each and every one of our Outreach Champions for their continued hard work and dedication.

We talked about our upcoming radio recordings happening this afternoon with our core team – Lewis, Rachel Holmes Bennett, Sue, Kevin, and Tony.  Part of the core team will be on air interviewing and the others will be supporting them by practising  the interview questions that they have prepared.  It is a really tight team and everyone works together so that everyone feels confident and ready to shine. We talked about the future and that perhaps other people would like to interview people on the show on topics they feel strongly about and this is something people will definitely consider.

Special shout out to every single Outreach Champion today – because your dedication deserves to be celebrated!

No issues. No problems. Just teamwork, ideas, and progress.

Over the past few months we’ve been working with PC Geoff from Merseyside Police. He’s supported our sponsored walk, visited the Cottage, talked about keeping safe online to name a few things– and now he’s given our members the amazing opportunity to visit the Mounted Police Section!

When we arrived, the excitement was huge! We were welcomed by Fliss, a mounted police officer, who showed us around the stables. PC Geoff brought carrots and polos so everyone could feed the horses.

We met Hunter, Albie, Chunky, Brago, Amber, Silver, Diamond, Arnie and Scottie – and learned so much! The horses cover events all over Merseyside, from football matches to protests, and this section is the oldest mounted police unit in the country. The tallest horse is 18.5 hands (very tall indeed!).

We also got to see all the facilities – an indoor arena for training, a salon for wash-downs, the tack the horses wear and all the specialist kit the officers and horses use for different aspects of their job.

Amber, one of our members, said:
“The things I liked about the visit was being able to feed and stroke the horses, and also finding out the training the horses have to go through – it was really interesting.”

A huge thank you to PC Geoff for his ongoing support in giving our members such positive and memorable experiences. Thank you also to and the staff at the Mounted Police Section for being so welcoming to us all.

Don’t forget to follow to keep up with their work!

Our Reach Out radio presenters have been hard at work getting ready for the next shows on LCR 106.7FM!

Lewis has been practising with Tony ahead of his interview with Louise on Friday, while Kevin has been working with Rachel on his interview with Ronnie from the GMB. Week after week, members are showing real dedication – turning up to practise, building confidence, and supporting each other to shine on air.

What makes this even more special is that our members are deciding the content of the programme and coming up with more ideas about what the future of The Reach Out Show could look like, and it’s awesome to see everyone fully invested in deciding the content that really matters to people.

A big thank you also to Stephen Faragher and Matty Grimes from LCR for their encouragement, guidance and belief in our members. Their support, alongside the passion and talent of our team, is making Reach Out a brilliant platform for people with learning disabilities to have their voices heard loud and clear.

A HUGE  well done to everyone involved – your creativity, professionalism and commitment are what makes Reach Out so powerful.
