Everything is your choice….yes I mean EVERYTHING.
A policy is a guideline not a law and that’s what the maternity system runs on
The law says that for every policy and intervention that is offered to you, you have to give informed consent if you want to receive it.
Informed consent looks like this
Knowing why this is being offered
Knowing what they are trying to avoid when offering it
Knowing the true chance of this risk occurring (ie 1/1000)
Knowing what the risks are of what’s being offered and the chances of those occurring
Knowing what else you can do instead
Tapping into your instinct
Feeling like you had enough time to make the decision without being pressured
Did you have any of this as a conversation when being offered something in maternity care? Probably not because most of the conversations go like
We need to do X now okay? That’s not informed consent and it can lead to you feeling very confused after, which can lead to birth trauma.
If you’re ready to have all the right questions to ask and to work on your confidence to make your own birth choices… then look no further
