Expect Limited

Expect Limited Expect is a registered charity providing health and social care services based in Sefton, Merseyside that has been operating for 35 years.

We offer individual focussed support to help you live your best possible life. Expect Ltd is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as a domiciliary and residential service, providing a range of services for people living with mental illness and/ or learning disabilities. We uphold a strong community approach and focus the efforts of highly trained, motivated staff on supporting some of

the most isolated individuals in the community. Expect is a charity that emphasises the benefits of inclusion and social integration, operating an alternative approach to institutionalised care and support. Expect manages the operation of housing projects such as supported living provision, registered care homes and community outreach services in order to provide appropriate levels of support, in an appropriate lifestyle context to best support each individual we work with. In addition to this Expect operates a comprehensive day service support/ community facility called ‘The Bowersdale Centre’ in Seaforth. The charity works alongside other voluntary, community and charitable organisations from this hub facility to develop service provision for the maximum amount of people who we can help. Expect aims to promote the value of ordinary living opportunities and eliminate the segregation and stigmatisation of people who consider themselves to be disadvantaged by reason of their physical health, mental health or learning disability. To this end we provide services that aim to preserve and protect the well-being of the disadvantaged in our society on a not-for-profit, charitable basis.

Today is national schizophrenia awareness day in the United Kingdom. It is a mental illness with an large stigma attached to those with the condition and many misconceptions exist in media lead to harmful and negative attitudes towards it. Today is a opportunity to learn more about schizophrenia and help to dispel some myths about the illness. One of the biggest misconceptions regarding the illness is that schizophrenia makes people violent and dangerous people. This is verifiably untrue. People who suffer from schizophrenia are in fact much more likely to be victims of acts of violence than perpetrators. Another common misconception is that it is untreatable. while schizophrenia is not curable, therapy, support services and antipsychotic medications have all been proven to help people treat the illness and live fulfilling lives.

Sophie, who is a tenant at Southport Road has been working on improving the garden at the back of her house. Expect wanted to find out more about her cultivation of a more colorful and unique garden, why she decided to begin working on it and how it has improved her day to day life.

When did you begin working on the garden?

I started gardening in the last house that I lived in, but I wasn't able to complete the layout of the garden to my liking while I was there. When I moved to this house earlier this year, I decided to complete my vision of the garden here instead.

What is your schedule for working on the garden weekly?

I go outside and water the flowers and plants in the garden almost every day. If I would like a new flower or vegetable to grow in the garden i have to also choose them and buy them which takes time. I also like to buy different types of plant pots, and garden accessories like gnomes for the garden.

How has the garden improved your mental health?

It has improved my mental health by giving me a routine of going outside and watering the plants and making changes to the garden's layout. I am also proud of the garden and feel happy and fulfilled with what I have done so far.

Beaconsfield gardening

Two service users; Sydney and Latisha who live together have been working on the front and back gardens of their residence, successfully brightening up the outside of where they live and showing their creative skills in the process. In order to find out more about why they began their work on the garden and how it may have positively impacted their day to day lives, one of the service users Sydney and a support worker named Grace were interviewed by Expect and asked about how the gardening has helped the two. to read the full interview go to the link below:

interview with Sydney

Why did you and Latisha begin to work on the garden?

We were tired of the front of the house being bored and very plain. We also felt that working on the garden would make our house feel more like a home.

how has working on the garden helped your mental health?

It has helped my mental health by being able to see the positive impact of Latisha and I's work on the front garden, as many people walking past the house have complimented the flowers we have put inside.

Support worker Grace interview

What are the benefits to Latisha and Sydney's day to day wellbeing that you have seen from the gardening ?

There are many benefits to the gardening for them both. They have been able to utilize their creativity with the flowers that they choose to plant, they are able to socialize in the garden as they work and take pride in something they are responsible for the upkeep of. The natural beauty of the flowers also helps to bring peace to their minds.
