Just over a year ago, Liverpool University Hospitals became the first hospitals to offer pioneering robotic-assisted surgery for head and neck cancers with Intuitive’s da Vinci Single Port (SP) surgical system.

Mr Jason Fleming, Consultant ENT and Head and Neck Surgeon, had the privilege of becoming the first NHS consultant to operate the surgical system at Aintree and explained at the time,
"“Tumours of the throat (tonsils and back of tongue) are rising globally, but especially in North West England, with smoking and human papillomavirus (HPV) exposure as major causes. The Liverpool Head and Neck Centre has a long record of pioneering minimally invasive surgery, but now with the addition of the da Vinci SP, we will be able to offer the latest technology to a region with the greatest need.”

Mr Fleming is a Consultant at The Sefton Suite in Aintree and is available for appointments by contacting our team on 0151 529 6799 or by emailing info@seftonsuite.co.uk

Patients in Cheshire and Merseyside have become the first in Europe to be offered pioneering robotic-assisted surgery for head and neck cancers thanks to £1m donation from the Marina Dalglish Appeal

Huge congratulations to the Neck of Femur Unit and Sefton Suite at Aintree University Hospital, which have become the site’s first teams to receive Platinum ratings as part of our internal quality assessment process, called Liverpool Hospitals Quality Assessment (LQA) 🌟
This recognises departments that have held Gold ratings for three consecutive years after the quality of care they deliver has been assessed against 14 care standards, including safety, nutrition, infection control and safeguarding.
Jenny Taylor, Director of Nursing for Aintree, said: “These two teams are inspiring us all at Aintree and I want to congratulate them both on becoming the first recipients of the platinum LQA status. They both demonstrate how good leadership, effective teamwork and a focus on patient-centred care and continuous improvement helps us deliver the best experience possible for our patients.”

February is 'Heart Month' in the UK.

We all need some cholesterol in our blood to stay healthy, but too much can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Cholesterol levels can be affected by several factors including lifestyle, diet, genetics and health conditions such as diabetes. Anyone can have high cholesterol, even if you are young, slim, eat well and exercise because it can be a genetic condition.

Winter can feel extremely challenging to your health, below you will find some fantastic tips to aid your Winter wellness this year.

- Keep up to date with your medication. If your heart health and any other underlying conditions are well managed you are less likely to have problems when the cold weather sets in.
- Protect yourself from flu and covid. Make sure you keep up to date with any available jabs.
- Keep yourself warm. If the weather gets really cold then stay indoors but always remember to keep the body moving and keep active, it certainly boosts your energy and your mood.
- Fuel your body with healthy and tasty food. The vitamins and minerals in fruit and vegetables will help to support your immune system which in turn will assist you in fighting colds.
- Keep active. If the weather is good enough then try and get outside and walk as much as possible. If not there are plenty of exercises you can do indoors.
- Look after your mood and mental health. The lack of sunlight will mean that many of us aren't getting the right amount of vitamin D so the regular taking of vitamin D tablets would certainly assist.
- Stay in touch with your GP. If you have concerns then remember your GP will still be taking appointments over the Christmas period.

All in all do everything you can to stay well and enjoy your Christmas break.
