Talking to someone following a bereavement can feel daunting; you may be worried about saying the wrong thing or making them feel worse. The theme for this is so here are our top tips for speaking to someone about their grief.

πŸ’™ Acknowledge their loss: it can be tempting to avoid the subject out of fear of saying the wrong thing, but by avoiding it you may make them feel more isolated or feel like they can't talk about how they feel.

πŸ’™ Be there for them: grief can trigger a range of difficult and painful emotions which can be unpredictable. You don't have to be an expert or be able to fix anything, just be there.

πŸ’™ Listen and reassure: grief looks different for everyone and there is no right or wrong way to feel during the process. Listen to their experience and reassure them that whatever they are feeling is valid.

πŸ’™ Help them to get support if they need it: grief can be difficult to navigate and it's important to get help if feelings become so intense that they are preventing day to day life.

Today we're sharing thoughts from two staff members, reflecting on how we communicate and listen to people we work with, from those using our services across the country, to the organisations and partner agencies we work alongside.

Radha is one of our Project and Partnership Leads. She works within the community to establish strong links with other organisations to help streamline access to Mental Health services, providing more efficient communication between services and bringing the gap so more people can access support.
