A “small” fire… that destroyed a building standing since 1851.

That’s the reality of what happened on Union Street.

Most serious fires don’t start big—they start small and escalate fast.

And more often than not, it’s the initial response that determines the outcome.

Using the wrong extinguisher.
Not recognising the risk (especially with lithium batteries).
Delaying evacuation—even by seconds.

These are the moments where situations are either controlled… or lost.

Fire safety isn’t just about having equipment or policies in place—it’s about people knowing exactly what to do under pressure.

Would your team know what to do in the first 60 seconds?

👉 If you’re unsure, it’s time to get properly trained:

Yes — you can die from a heart attack, but it’s important to understand why and how, because this is where knowledge saves lives.
🫀 What actually happens in a heart attack (MI)?
A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when a coronary artery becomes blocked, stopping oxygen-rich blood from reaching part of the heart muscle.
The heart muscle begins to die (necrosis)
The longer the blockage remains, the greater the damage
This can weaken or disrupt the heart’s ability to function
⚠️ So why can it be fatal?
A heart attack can lead to death in several ways:
1. It can trigger a cardiac arrest
The damaged heart muscle can cause dangerous arrhythmias (like ventricular fibrillation)
The heart stops pumping effectively → sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
Without CPR/defibrillation, death can occur within minutes
2. Severe damage to the heart
Large heart attacks can cause heart failure or cardiogenic shock
The heart simply cannot pump enough blood to sustain life
3. Complications
Rupture of heart tissue
Severe rhythm disturbances
Multi-organ failure
🚨 The critical point
Not all heart attacks are immediately fatal — many people survive, especially with rapid treatment.
But:
A heart attack becomes far more dangerous if it progresses to a cardiac arrest.
⏱️ Why early action matters
Fast treatment (999/112, hospital care) can restore blood flow
Early recognition of symptoms (chest pain, sweating, nausea, arm/jaw pain) saves lives
If collapse occurs → CPR + AED = survival chance
💬 Bottom line
✔️ Yes, a heart attack c an kill
✔️ But survival rates improve dramatically with early recognition and action
✔️ Understanding the link between heart attack → cardiac arrest is key

A powerful and important reminder — a Heart Attack and a Cardiac Arrest are NOT the same thing.

A heart attack (MI) is a circulation problem caused by a blockage restricting blood flow to the heart muscle. A cardiac arrest (SCA), on the other hand, is an electrical failure where the heart suddenly stops pumping blood altogether.

The difference matters — because the response is different.

➡️ Heart attack: urgent medical care is critical
➡️ Cardiac arrest: immediate CPR and defibrillation can be the difference between life and death.

Understanding this distinction isn’t just theory — it saves lives. Many cardiac arrests are triggered by heart attacks, but without early intervention, survival chances drop rapidly.

This is why training, awareness, and confidence to act are so vital.

⚡ Spot the Difference… But Know the Right Answer

In a cardiac arrest, AED pad placement must be correct to be effective.

✅ Placement A is correct – in line with Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines (2025):

🔹 One pad: Upper right chest (below the collarbone)
🔹 Second pad: Left side of the chest, below the armpit (mid-axillary line)

This positioning allows the electrical shock to travel directly through the heart – giving the best chance of restoring a normal rhythm.

❌ Incorrect placement = reduced effectiveness of the shock

💡 Remember:
Right upper chest + left side = optimal pad placement

At Vital Signs Scotland, we train you to act quickly, confidently, and correctly when it matters most.

🚨 A defibrillator can be the difference between life and death.

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, early use of a defibrillator (AED) dramatically increases their chances of survival. Every second counts.

💡 Do you need training to use one?
No — defibrillators are designed for the public to use.

But here’s the reality…
👉 In an emergency, confidence matters just as much as access.

That’s why at Vital Signs Scotland, we include hands-on defibrillator training in every First Aid course we deliver.

✅ Build confidence
✅ Remove fear of “getting it wrong”
✅ Be ready to act when it matters most

Our learners don’t just pass a course — they leave ready to save a life.
