For generations, funeral directors have advertised a 24 hour service every day of the year. For more than 35 years we did exactly that. We were younger then with the stamina to work through the night and still give families our full attention the next day. But life changes and so do the responsibilities that come with it.
After three and a half decades of service we are now at a stage in life where our family must come first. We have ageing parents who need us and only one chance to watch the youngest child grow up. Those things matter. They deserve time, presence and energy, the same things we give to the families we support. That reality has dictated a change of tack.
We understand that our change in out of hours availability may have led some people to wonder whether we are still carrying out funerals. We want to reassure everyone that we are. We are still trading, still serving our community and still providing the same personal, dignified care we always have. The only change is how we manage our out of hours availability, not the quality or continuity of our service.
At the same time we are gradually transitioning towards the part of our work that has always been closest to our hearts: memorial masonry. It is a craft we have loved for decades and one that allows us to support families long after the funeral has taken place. Our background in precision trades naturally lends itself to craftsmanship, accuracy and a deep respect for materials and detail. This shift does not replace our funeral services. It simply reflects where our skills, experience and passion naturally lead us. We continue to offer our full funeral service just within office hours while also giving more time to the memorial work that means so much to us and to the families we serve.
We are also revitalising our joinery and property maintenance services, which we were locally known for in the years gone by. It feels like a natural extension of the practical, hands on work we have always taken pride in.
Lamberts were always known for the many services and trades we could provide. Over the years the family has offered funeral services, joinery, cabinet making, property repairs, memorial masonry, picture framing, taxi services, carriage master work and even mechanic and garage services (those old enough may remember Promenade Garage, Llandudno!) . Tony and his dad Arthur, our dad and grandfather, were known locally as people who worked hard at making a living and we simply want the same opportunity. Although Andy and Phil may not have been directly involved in some of those older services, we were most certainly brought up to be hands on and to do anything that could help the business. Returning to that wider skill set feels like coming home and it also helps us step back from the constant ties of out of hours work while still serving our community in a meaningful and practical way.
We were brought up in a family where you learned to be capable, practical and reliable, whatever the task in front of you. That ethos has shaped us and it is the same standard of competence and care we bring to every service we offer today. And if something falls outside our scope, we will only ever take it on if we can do it properly or we will help you connect with trusted partners we know and respect.
We would encourage people to keep an eye on the services we are developing. The trusted, continuous service we have provided in funeral care for decades is the same standard we intend to carry into the new and revitalised services we will be offering. We are building towards a broader, more hands on future for Lamberts, one that reflects our skills, our heritage and the needs of our community in the years ahead.
Please consider us as your first port of call for memorial masonry work. It remains our longest continuous line of work and we know it inside out, with a level of experience and understanding that only decades of hands on practice can provide.
We also know we are perhaps a little old fashioned in how we present ourselves. We do not push our funeral services on social media and we were brought up and trained to be a little demure about that side of our work. In truth this may have been detrimental to us at times but anyone who knew our father Tony will understand exactly why we have always taken the quieter, more respectful approach.
We sincerely hope our approach does not offend anyone and if the path we have chosen has caused any upset or distress we offer our sincere apologies. Our decisions come from a place of honesty, family responsibility and a desire to continue serving our community in a way that is sustainable and true to who we are.
Although we are always here for the families we support we do not provide out of hours assistance. Experience has shown us that almost everything can be handled safely and calmly once our office reopens and families have told us they prefer this honest approach to the illusion of a 24 hour service. What people value far more is continuity, knowing that when they call they will speak to someone who knows them, understands the situation and can give their full attention.
We are here for you, in a traditional family owned, small business, we do not push embalming when it is not needed, we do not upsell coffins or vehicles and we do not hide our prices behind vague wording or “from £…” disclaimers. Everything we do is transparent, practical and designed around what families actually want. You stay in control of the arrangements and together we create something meaningful, not something dictated by tradition for tradition’s sake, no flannel, the way we have been taught to help, what dad and grandad did!
Our usual office hours are 9.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday and 9.30 am to 3.30 pm on Fridays. Outside these times our phone diverts to an answerphone. If you need us outside office hours please leave a message. We will return your call as soon as we reopen unless you ask us not to and we will be with you as soon as possible after that.
This approach allows us to protect our team, honour our family responsibilities, keep our prices fair and maintain the personal, attentive service that families in our community value. It is the best way for us to continue offering the thoughtful, dignified care that Lamberts is known for.
There are many excellent local funeral directors who do offer 24 hour out of hours services and for some families that level of availability is exactly what they want. If that is the kind of support you feel you need we would genuinely encourage you to choose the provider that feels right for you. Every family is different and that is perfectly okay. Our approach will not suit everyone but it allows us to continue serving our community in a way that is sustainable, personal and true to who we are.
Please be reassured (hopefully you’ve read this far 🙏🏻) we are STILL funeral directors, but with reduced out of hours services.
We really can’t be any more honest than this!
Andy & Phil
