Costochondritis is pain at a rib head and can be extremely painful, causing sharp pain when moving or breathing deeply. I’ve recently had an interesting case of a desk worker who has had this debilitating pain for over a year, she’s had 3 treatments on her thoracic spine, diaphragm and rib heads and has now been sent off with exercises to manage her issue.

The rotator cuff.
The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles that connect your humerus to your scapula. The rotator cuff is made up of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. They provide support and stability to the joint as well as control the movements (in particular rotation) of your shoulder.
Rotator cuff injuries are extremely common…with the supraspinatus the most common to get injured (partly due to its poor blood supply rendering it vulnerable to injury). Common rotator cuff issues include tendinitis, tendinosis, calcific tendonitis (calcium deposits within the tendon), impingement syndromes and muscular tears - it is thought that 30-50% of people above the age of 50 have rotator cuff tears!!

The Shoulder Joint.
Technically the shoulder is made up of 3 different joints : the glenohumeral, the acromioclavicular and the scapulothoracic joint. It is the most mobile joint in the body and it allows up to reach up, wave, swim, throw and do all sorts of complex movements. However, in order for the shoulder to maintain it’s dynamic mobility it has had to sacrifice it’s stability. The shoulder is almost entirely dependant on muscular control (especially by the rotator cuff muscles - which we will cover in a later post)…so much so that the only bony connection which links your arm to the rest of your body is via your collarbone (clavicle)!!!
Due to the unstable and dynamic nature of this joint, it often causes problems and pain. Luckily osteopaths can treat the vast majority of shoulder issues. So if you have any concerns regarding your shoulder, give us a call!

What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a compression of the sciatic nerve, which is a large nerve that runs from your lower back, down your posterior thigh before splitting into two nerves and terminating in the lower leg and foot. Symptoms include back pain, buttock pain and leg pain as well as altered sensation such as numbness or pins and needles in your leg.
There are a variety of things which could cause sciatica such as lumbar disc issues, muscular issues e.g. piriformis tension and various other causes. Osteopathy can provide you with an accurate diagnosis, treatment and managing strategies to help you recover from your sciatica.
