NUTRITION
MACRO NUTRIENTS
PROTEINS
These are the body builders. Formed from chains of amino acids. They form and renew body parts. The building blocks of proteins are called amino acids. The digestion of proteins is started by acid and pepsin secretion in the stomach. Any undigested protein is broken down to shorter chains of amino acids by the enzyme trypsin in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Proteins cannot be used by the body as they are found in foods, but must be broken down into their component parts, to be restructured into new proteins as required, for hormones, blood, skin, nails, ligaments, etc. Short chains of amino acids are called peptides
Protein is essential for the development of enzymes and hormones. An enzyme is a large biological molecule, acting as a catalyst, and responsible for chemical reactions and break down of food, helping to sustain life. It is essential for the digestive process, which begins in the stomach, and in the assimilation and absorption processes which are part of metabolism and essential for body function. Enzymes may require coenzymes, or vitamins or minerals to ensure that the chemical processes are effective.
FATS AND LIPIDS
Dietary fats may be saturated or unsaturated. Saturated fats are mainly animal-based, and unsaturated fats are mainly plant-based, and usually healthier. Eating too much saturated fats can cause health problems and can be associated with cardio-vascular problems. High concentrations of low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol can leave deposits on the inside walls of capillaries and arteries. The digestion of fats starts when bile salts are released by the gall bladder. Bile salts emulsify the fatty acids, enabling the fats to be "dissolved" in the water to be absorbed. Lipids can be dispersed in water droplets. The bile can be reabsorbed and re-circulated, and enables fat to be dispatched throughout the small intestine, and eventually to the liver. Here it is repackaged in a coating of cholesterol and protein, allowing it to be dissolved in the blood and transported to different parts of the body.
Cholesterol is a porridge-like substance found in animal fats. There are two types found in the blood. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) can be beneficial. Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) can be harmful. Cholesterol is a porridge-like substance found in animal fats. There are two types found in the blood. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) can be beneficial. Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) can be harmful. Cholesterol can play a role in the brain and glandular system and the production of bile salts and hormones. Excesses plug the arteries and 90% of gall stones are composed of cholesterol. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can be controlled by cutting down the consumption of saturated fats, although some people are predisposed to high cholesterol levels.

Vitamins are unrelated organic compounds. They occur in small amounts in many foods. Vitamins which make solutions in water are water soluble. Those that make solutions in fatty liquids are fat soluble. They help to complete chemical reactions in the body, and are necessary for normal metabolic functioning of the body. Without vitamins, life threatening deficiency disease can occur, vitamin C deficiency can cause scurvy, niacin deficiency can cause pellagra.

DIABETES AWARENESS
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple aetiology or causes. In fact many researchers admit that the causes are unclear. Diabetes is characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar levels), with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, resulting from defects in insulin secretion or both. Type 1 diabetes is caused by insufficient production of insulin, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It is characterised by increased sugar levels in the blood and urine, excessive thirst and frequent urination and acidosis. It usually starts in childhood. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in adulthood, has no symptoms and is diagnosed by glucose intolerance. It is exacerbated by obesity and inactive lifestyle. It is less severe than type 1 and can be treated by changes in diet as well as an exercise regime, and is not insulin dependent.
Type 2 diabetes is referred to as an autoimmune disease because the immune system appears to mistakenly attack the pancreas and destroy the beta cells of the pancreas to the point where they can no longer produce sufficient insulin. This attack seems to start when the immune system is triggered to do so by something in the environment, perhaps a toxin or a virus. Markers of this destruction called auto-antibodies can be seen in most people with type 1 diabetes. When blood sugars are high these markers are present in over 85% of people with the disease.
Type 2 diabetes is due to IR or Insulin Resistance. Sufferers from Type 2 diabetes produce insulin, but the insulin in their pancreas is either insufficient or the body is unable to recognise the insulin and use it properly. This is Insulin Resistance (IR) and means the glucose cann`t get to the body`s cells, and builds up in the blood, instead of going to the cells, resulting in the cells and the body being unable to function properly. There will be increased urination as the body tries to clear the sugar and this may cause dehydration and fluid loss, and the possibility of a coma.

REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is the technique of applying pressure to specific reflex points on the hands and feet to stimulate the body`s own healing powers.
Traditional Chinese medicine attributes good health to the flow of qi energy throughout the body along energy channels, or meridians, which begin and extend down to the feet and the hands, and can be manipulated to ensure a well-balanced flow through pressure on vital points. Good health is only possible when all the body functioning works efficiently. Diseases and imbalances in one part of the body ultimately affect functioning. The Chinese first began the concept of Reflexology 5,000 years ago
Western scientists began to research this in the 19th century, and started to look at the nervous system, responses and reflexes and reflex actions, and how this could affect health. American physician William Fitzgerald in the early 1900`s observed that direct pressure could produce a pain-relieving response. He divided the body into 5 longitudinal zones on the left and right sides of the body, extending from the fingers right down the body down to the feet and toes. He named this zone theory. Other practitioners, like Eunice Ingham complemented to the theory and she added 3 lateral zones and further detail to create a map on the feet and hands showing which pressure points correspond to different parts of the body.
Pressure points in the feet communicate with the brain, internal organs and other parts of the body. Pressure signals from the sole of the feet tell the brain what the body is doing and whether, blood sugar, oxygen, muscle contraction and relaxation needs are being met. Consider this when is walking, jogging or running. Reflexology can give a similar response.
Reflexology offers a drug-free treatment option for a variety of health conditions, and it can be used to aid recovery from injury to the feet or hands or other parts of the body. It helps to ease over-used or tired feet or hands, and it can be used to reduce pain. Reflexology helps to maintain manual dexterity and locomotive abilities, and to maintain health in a preventative way, as well as promoting general relaxation. It can release endorphin, the body`s feel-good chemicals. Reflexology can be used on people who are disabled or in poor health, who may not be able to undergo vigorous exercise, providing muscular manipulation and many other beneficial health effects. Reflexology has been known to reduce possible symptoms of ill-health, such as coronary heart disease, angina, high blood pressure, constipation and bowel problems, sinusitis, headaches, as well as kidney and urinary problems. It has been known to help with stiffness and arthritis, with respiratory problems and even with mental health problems. Reflexology is probably safer in the long term than taking drug medication which may have many side effects and other health problems.
One can visit a professional reflexologist but everyone needs to look after one`s feet and hands. Most of should be able to examine and to give our feet or hands a quick massage after a busy day. It is important to use appropriate footwear. Fashionable shoes may not be the best for our feet and for our general health. It is important to know how to relax the feet and also how to exercise them properly, using the full range of movement in the toes and ankle joints. The same is true for the hands.
We should have some knowledge of the hands and feet. They are both essential for us to get around and perform simple everyday tasks, but we only tend to notice them when they start giving us problems. They are both quite delicate. The hands and feet have a complex arrangement of 26 bones, muscles, tendons and nerves. The feet have to withstand the enormous pressures of getting us around the place. The hands have to perform an enormous amount of precise intricate tasks.

Controlling Stress
Many people are affected by stress at the present time

We can help

It is important to plan your days. You can break your day up into periods of different activities or tasks. Keep busy. Don't let yourself get. Try doing different, perhaps things you were interested years ago but never got the chance of exploring.

You may need to have strategies of calming yourself. Things like yoga, meditation, reflexology, acupressure, aromatherapy, or massage can help. It is important to learn about ourselves what stresses, and what affects our health. It is important before the problem becomes acute. Drinking, smoking or taking tablets may not be the answer

What Chakra Are You Guided By?

Everything in life is energy, and that’s what the theory of the seven chakras is based on.

Chakras are the hubs of energy which are spread throughout the body, from the very base of the spine to the top of the head. Described as ‘energy centres’ in holistic terminology, these subtle parts of our body are untraceable, much like our emotions....

From thousands of years ago, up until today, the belief is that when these energy hubs become unbalanced or "blocked," it results in illness of the mind and/or body. As it happens, the most common symptoms of a blocked chakra are anxiety, lethargy and poor digestion.

Here’s our quick summary on the 7 chakras and what they represent:

1 – Root Chakra - Represents the feeling of being grounded, our stability and foundation.

2 – Sacral Chakra - Represents acceptance of others, connectivity and new experiences.

3 – Solar Plexus Chakra - Represents personal power and being in control of our lives.

4 – Heart Chakra - Represents our ability to love and self-acceptance.

5 – Throat Chakra - Represents our ability to speak, communicate and express ourselves.

6 – Third Eye Chakra - Represents focus and our ability to see the bigger picture.

7 – Crown Chakra - Represents our connection to spirituality.
