Chris Williams Specialist Optometrist

Chris Williams Specialist Optometrist Welcome to Chris Williams Optometrists, a family run, friendly and professional optometry practice in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Chris first came to Llantwit Major to work in 1993. After 6 years in the town he decided to open his own practice in Newton House, a premise located in the heart of the town and first built by another Williams family for their fruit and veg business. The practice rapidly grew and and soon it became necessary to utilise the whole of the ground floor of Newton House. This required significant invest

ment, but the rewards were many: increased reception space, a new dispensing area, a second (wheel chair friendly) consulting room and an on-site lab.

Absolutely delighted to have been appointed by Heath Education & Improvement Wales and Cardiff & Vale Health Authority as an Advanced Training Practice.
Jason Scaife joined me today for his first session. Jason is a fully qualified Optometrist who has completed his post graduate university training in his quest to become an Independent Prescriber. Just like I did, he needs to assemble a case book of patients he has seen who require medical treatment for their eyes under the guidance of an experienced IP supervisor (yup that's me!!). After he has completed his case book, he will then have the small matter of the College of Optometrists final exam before he can finally write medication prescriptions himself.

And now the long over due final installment of "What's that". Number 5: The Cerium Intuitive Colorimeter. This one is a bit different to all the other high tech bits of kit (Numbers 1-4 in the series are still available if interested to look back on) in so much as its not found in many consulting rooms. In short: A box full of coloured lights to help people with certain reading difficulties see the print more clearly. The long answer: An instrument for finding the exact colour and density of tint that will help people with "visual stress" read most clearly and comfortably. The colourimeter allows us to change the "hue" (the colour), the "saturation" (the depth of colour) and the brightness independently to tailor the tint exactly to the patients needs. Symptoms of visual stress (sometimes called Meares-Irlen syndrome) can include:
Words appearing to move, blur, or double when reading
Feeling fatigued when focusing on text
Sensitivity to bright light or high-contrast screens
Headaches or eye strain after reading

There is a particularly nasty strain of viral conjunctivitis doing the rounds. I have seen numerous cases in the last few weeks mainly parents of young children. Viral conjunctivitis aka epidemic conjunctivitis spreads like wildfire amongst young children and their close contacts. It causes an irritable, red, watery eye, which can dry a bit overnight to leave sticky residue on the lashes. It does not respond to antibiotics, and in most cases simply needs good hygiene including separate towels, flannels and lots of hand washing to prevent further spread. A cold compress can provide symptomatic relief and the immune system clears up the virus after around a week.
In some cases, especially it seems with the current strain, it can cause a more severe infection involving the cornea, leading to increased pain and blurred vision. Once confirmed, these cases benefit from a course of topical steroids. Diagnosis and management of these cases requires either a Specialist Independant Prescribing Optometrist or a hospital eye department.
