I have a community board in the hallway of 3 Boverton road (Gwyneth Morgans opticians). I am looking for several things.

1. If you are a maker, a crafter or you sell things for charity. Then we have an opportunity for you to have a shelf to sell your items as part of our eventual community space. In the future you will find teas and coffees from 10 till 3 daily as well as citizens advice, alzheimers society and other 3rd sector organisations. The shelf space fee will go back into the teas and coffees.

2. If you have a group, an event or a charity. Drop in a poster, a card, an advert or anything so we can let people know. Not everyone is on social media.

3. I also want to start a list of reputable local companies that will help the community. (Not free services) but a place where people can look and trust that they wont be taken advantage of. So plumbers, gardners, handymen etc (I will check reviews and assist people to access the services safely if needed!

4. If you have something that you would like to do in the community with a group, we also host a community event every 6 weeks (average)

“You can’t use Direct Payments for anything that isn’t ‘care’.”

✔️ Truth:
The law in Wales is based on well‑being, not “tasks.”
Support can include anything that helps you achieve your personal outcomes — emotional, social, physical, or practical.
This is written directly into the Social Services and Well‑being (Wales) Act.

16/03/2026

“If you don’t use all your hours every week, we’ll take them away.”

✔️ Truth:
This is one of the most damaging myths.
Direct Payments are not meant to punish people for having good days, bad days, or fluctuating needs.
Unused hours can often be:
• Carried forward
• Used flexibly
• Reallocated to meet outcomes in a different way
Reviews should be supportive, not punitive.

“If you use an agency, you can’t use your Direct Payment.”
✔️ Truth:
This is completely false — and it’s one of the most damaging myths because it limits people’s choice and control.
The Social Care Wales Direct Payments Guide makes it very clear that Direct Payments are designed to give people flexibility in how their care is arranged. That includes:The Social Care Wales Direct Payments Guide makes it very clear that Direct Payments are designed to give people flexibility in how their care is arranged. That includes:
• Employing your own Personal Assistants
• Using a care agency
• Using a micro‑provider
• Mixing approaches (e.g., some PA hours + some agency hours)
There is no rule that says Direct Payments cannot be used with an agency.
In fact, the guidance explicitly states that Direct Payments can be used to purchase support from an organisation, not just to employ staff directly.
This means:
• You can choose an agency if that’s what works for you
• You can switch between agency and PAs
• You can use a combination to meet your outcomes
• The Local Authority must support your choice as long as it meets your assessed needs
Direct Payments are about control, independence, and flexibility — not restricting you to one model of care.
If someone has told you otherwise, they are not following the national guidance.

💬 “They Told Me I Couldn’t…” — Busting the Biggest Myths About Direct Payments in Wales
Every week, I hear from people across Wales who’ve been given confusing, conflicting, or simply incorrect information about Direct Payments. And honestly? It’s no wonder so many feel stressed or discouraged before they’ve even begun.
So let’s clear the fog.
Using the official Social Care Wales Direct Payments Guide (updated February 2025), here are the most common things clients say they’ve been told — and the truth behind them. I will post one MYTH every day. Let me know if you have other ones!

“All manual handling must be double‑handed — even when a track hoist is in place.”
✔️ Truth:
This is one of the most common misunderstandings, and it causes unnecessary stress for families and PAs.
The Social Care Wales Direct Payments Guide and wider Welsh manual‑handling principles make it clear that:
• Manual handling should be proportionate, risk‑assessed, and based on the individual’s needs, not a blanket rule.
• A track hoist is specifically designed to enable safe single‑handed care when appropriate.
• Double‑handed care is not automatically required just because a person uses equipment.
• Local Authorities must consider least‑restrictive, outcome‑focused, and dignity‑preserving approaches — and single‑handed care often meets those criteria.
In fact, the national direction of travel in Wales encourages single‑handed care where safe, because it:
• Promotes independence
• Reduces intrusion
• Improves continuity
• Uses resources more effectively
If a professional insists on double‑handed care without a personalised risk assessment, they are not following the guidance.
Equipment like track hoists exists precisely to reduce the need for multiple staff.
The law requires decisions to be based on your situation — not organisational convenience.

🎤 Spoken Word: “I Am Mia”

I wake before the sun
because the quiet is the only part of the day that belongs to me.
Kettle on. Cups in a line.

Order in a world that asks me to hold everything together.
Mum wheels in, smiling through the tired.
Lily bursts in, all noise and questions and tangled thoughts.
I help her dress — shirt, trousers, socks —
a rhythm that keeps us both steady.
At school, they talk about weekends and sleepovers.
I talk in nods.

My mind is at home, checking on Mum,
hoping Lily’s day is gentle.
When I get back, I switch into caring mode
like flicking on a light.
Snacks cut just right.
Medication times.

Lifting, guiding, soothing.
Trying not to break under the weight of being needed.
Sometimes it’s too loud.
Too bright.
Too much.
So I hide in the bathroom with my headphones
and breathe myself back into my body.

At night, I check on everyone.
Lily asleep with her rabbit.
Mum resting.
The house finally still.
And I lie under glow‑in‑the‑dark stars
wondering if anyone sees me
the way I see them.

But there are people out there
who understand kids like me —
Carers Trust Wales,
Barnardo’s Cymru,
Action for Children,
Meic Cymru,
and the young carers teams in every Welsh council.
Places that say,
“You matter too.”
