Pelvic misalignment occurs when the pelvic bones are not properly aligned. This condition can lead to a variety of symptoms and affect daily activities, making it crucial to understand its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Causes:
1. Poor Posture: The most common cause for pelvic misalignment is chronic poor posture, especially while sitting or standing, can gradually shift the pelvis out of alignment.
2. Injury: Trauma from falls, car accidents, or sports injuries can displace the pelvic bones.
3. Leg Length Discrepancy: A difference in leg lengths can tilt the pelvis, causing misalignment.

Symptoms:
- Lower Back Pain: Misalignment often stresses the lumbar spine, causing chronic or acute pain.
- Hip and or Groin Pain: The hips and or groin area may feel sore or tender, particularly on one side.
- Buttock Pain: Pain or discomfort may radiate into the buttocks.
- Knee Pain: Misalignment can affect the knees, leading to pain or discomfort.
- Mobility Issues: Difficulty walking, standing, or bending due to pain or restricted movement.

Treatment Options:
1. Manual Therapy and Corrective Exercise: Manual Muscle Releases, Joint adjustments, targeted exercises/ stretches and learning proper posture/ ergonomics can help realign the pelvis by addressing imbalances contributing to misalignment.
2. Orthotics: Custom shoe inserts can correct leg length discrepancies and improve alignment.

Pelvic misalignment can significantly impact daily life, causing pain and limiting mobility. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options is essential for managing this condition effectively.

The discs get hydrated and receive nutrients from spinal movements and movement in general. Therefore, sitting or standing still for long periods can inhibit their ā€œfeedingā€.

It is also worth mentioning that keeping the spine in one place – say, seated – for long periods and lack of mobility over years can thicken the spinal ligaments, reducing hydration and nutrition further.

Tip: For a happy spine, we would recommend to aim for 8-10k steps per day and to incorporate a gentle daily routine that involves the basic spinal movements (Flexion - Extension, Rotation, Side Flexion).

When an individual’s knees bow inward, it is often referred to as ā€œknees valgusā€ or ā€œknee collapse.ā€ This dysfunction involves the knees moving toward each other instead of tracking over the toes or maintaining a straight alignment. Even though it appears that the problem is coming from the knees, it usually comes from the hips or the lower-legs. It can lead to excessive loads in the knees, hips & lower back. It can cause pain, wear & tear and decrease the body’s ability to function/ perform optimally.

This article aims to provide useful insights and practical tips on how to sleep with sciatica, offering solace to those seeking a good night’s rest while dealing with this condition.

Sleeping Positions and Sciatica:
When it comes to finding relief from lower back pain and sciatica, the right sleeping position can make a world of difference. The way you position your body while you sleep can either alleviate or exacerbate your symptoms.

One of the most recommended sleeping positions for individuals with lower back pain and sciatica is sleeping on your side (painful side on top) with a pillow between your knees. This position helps to align your spine and reduce pressure on your lower back. By placing a pillow between your knees, you can also help keep your hips in proper alignment, further reducing strain on your lower back.

Front sleeping is generally not recommended because the neck is in a rotated position and usually one leg is open to the side creating a sustained asymmetrical body position. These can lead to dysfunction. However, for some people who suffer from a sciatica caused by a disc bulge, this could be an option. Not recommended for any other sciatica cause.

Fetal position is generally not recommended because most people spend all day seating which is a very similar position. However, for some people who suffer from a sciatica caused by degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis, this could be an option.

Another beneficial sleeping position for lower back pain and sciatica is sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees. This position helps to maintain the natural curve of your spine and reduces stress on your lower back. Placing a pillow or two under your knees can also help alleviate pressure on your sciatic nerve, providing relief from sciatica symptoms.

Remember, everyone is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. The key is to listen to your body and find what works best for you.

Unless your sport involves the same or a very similar activity, this exercise is strongly not recommended. The main reasons are:

- Only people with hyper-flexible hamstrings can achieve a neutral lower back position during this exercise. If you have a look at our Disc Bulge Causes video, lifting weights from a non-neutral lower back position can be very harmful.

- In order for the trunk to be in an upright position, the hip flexor muscles will need to work excessively as they are in a shortened position. Muscles can’t produce force from a very shortened or a very lengthened position, so the hip flexor muscles can’t really become stronger from this exercise. What they can become though is overactive (neural drive too high) and this can cause dysfunction for example Excessive Lordosis and Excessive Forward Lean. Dysfunction is highly correlated with pain and injury.

- Exercises are tools to either get us stronger, either improve our strength endurance and stability. From this position, it is too uncomfortable and very very risky to lift heavy weights, so this exercise can’t really get us stronger. It will also be a bad choice for stability as its base is very wide. That leaves us only with strength endurance but that’s ideally done in combination with stability, plus there are many other, far better options.

- One of the most important characteristics of a good Compound exercise (not only targeting a very specific muscle but targeting several muscles at the same time) is to be able to engage the Glutes while executing. This is important not only because the Glutes are the Prime mover and a very important muscle, it’s important because the Glutes are a key part of the Kinetic Chain. One of the most important things that a Compound exercise should be doing is to reinforce the neurological connection of the links of the Kinetic Chain. In this exercise the Glutes are inhibited and it’s completely impossible to engage them.

- Face the object and align the body with it.
- Bend the knees to lower the body to the level of the object.
- Keep feet shoulder width apart to ensure a broad, stable base.
- Keep the back straight.
- Keep the arms close to trunk.
- Never rotate the trunk while lifting.
- Lift using the strong muscles in the legs, rather than the postural muscles in the trunk.
- If the load is too heavy for one person, wait until you can get help.

Flat feet, also known as pes planus or fallen arches, is a dysfunction where the arches on the inside of the feet flatten, allowing the entire sole of the foot to touch the floor.
The reasons are usually tight calfs and side of lower leg muscles, weak muscles that support the arch and inappropriate footwear.

Feet flatten can lead to excessive loads in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, lower back. It can cause pain, wear & tear and decrease the body’s ability to function/ perform optimally. It is the main cause of plantar fasciitis.
