Eye Journal An international peer-reviewed medical journal. Advancing the science and practice of ophthalmology

Eye aims to provide the practising ophthalmologist with information on the latest clinical and laboratory based research. Whilst principally aimed at the practising clinician, the journal contains material of interest to a wider readership including optometrists, orthoptists, other health care professionals and research workers in all aspects of the field of visual science. Eye has a global distri

bution and supports medical professionals in the delivery of excellent ophthalmic services and healthcare. The journal is produced by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the professional body for ophthalmologists, and published by Nature Publishing Group

Sickle cell retinopathy causes vision loss but remains under-recognized compared to diabetic retinopathy. Our study maps global research trends, revealing disparities in funding and collaboration. More focus on SCR is needed for health equity

Retinal vascular diseases pose significant challenges to ensuring global ocular health with consequent negative impacts on the well-being of individuals worldwide. This study explores the divergent research landscapes of Sickle Cell Retinopathy (SCR) and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), two of the most co...

Study finds that even in early/intermediate AMD, structural retinal changes on OCT, like refractile drusen, nGA and subretinal deposits, are linked to reduced visual function under both bright and low light. These findings highlight key imaging markers of functional decline before advanced disease.

Review: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) leads to vision loss, partly due to retinal non-perfusion (RNP), an area current treatments don’t target. Emerging evidence points to the Sema3A/Nrp1 pathway as a key driver of RNP. Targeting it could offer a disease-modifying approach to preserve vision and reduce treatment burden.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of acquired blindness. Retinal non-perfusion (RNP) is associated with DR worsening and vision loss. There are no treatments available that specifically address RNP in DR. The semaphorin 3A (Sema3A)/neuropilin 1 (Nrp1) pathway may be involved in RNP progre...

Review: Corneal transplantation has advanced rapidly, with selective techniques like DSAEK, DMEK, and DALK now the modern gold standard.

While PKP remains widespread, technological advancements such as FSL-assisted surgery, bio-engineered corneas, and cell-based therapies are key to improving donor supply and access to surgery for patients.

Patients in Europe face delays in accessing innovative retinal treatments, partly due to a lack of clear EU guidelines on clinical endpoints for ophthalmology

The BRIDGE initiative—launched by experts in late 2024—aims to change that by building consensus on standardized, patient-relevant endpoints across retinal diseases. Harmonization with global regulators like the FDA is key to ensuring faster, fairer access to future therapies.

Now in EYE OPEN:

There is a lack of representation of most racial and ethnic populations in clinical trials in ophthalmology. In 2017, Roche/Genentech began to introduce a range of initiatives to improve diversity of trial participants. This study assesses whether company initiatives introduced in 2017 improved the diversity of clinical trial demographics.

Around 12M people are blind due to age-related cataract—but what really causes it?

This review looks beyond lab animals to our companion dogs, cats & horses to explore how daylight, diet, diabetes, dehydration, drugs, DNA & damage affect lens opacification.

A UK study found med students preferred the flipped classroom model for teaching—especially for case-based learning using interactive tools.

Structured pre-learning wasn’t seen as a burden, and most students want more flipped sessions in future.

FC is not suitable for all topics in ophthalmology and appropriate content selection is the key. A combination of FC and TC would be the best way forward to cater to the needs of the students.
