| How Sunlight Affects Your Mood and Anxiety 🌞

As we celebrate the longest day of the year on June 21st, let's explore how those extra daylight hours might benefit your mental wellbeing.

The science behind sunlight and mood:
↪️ Sunlight exposure increases the brain's production of serotonin
↪️ Serotonin helps boost mood, promote feelings of calm, and improve focus
↪️ Darkness triggers melatonin production, which regulates sleep
↪️ This natural balance can be disrupted during shorter winter days

How to harness the solstice benefits:
↪️ Spend time outdoors during morning hours
↪️ Position your workspace near natural light when possible
↪️ Take short breaks outside throughout the day
↪️ Maintain consistent sleep patterns despite the longer evenings

For those with anxiety, seasonal changes can have significant impacts on symptoms, whether it's the winter blues or summer anxiety triggered by disrupted routines and sleep patterns.

Understanding your body's response to light can be an important part of managing anxiety year-round. Therapy can help.

June is 🧠 | Here's How We Can Understand the Science Behind PTSD

Did you know that PTSD isn't just 'all in the mind'? Brain scans show clear biological changes that explain why recovery often requires professional support.

Research reveals three key brain areas affected by PTSD:

The Amygdala (Your Alarm System) 🚨
➡️ Becomes overactive
➡️ Triggers too easily
➡️ Stays on high alert longer than needed

The Hippocampus (Your Memory Centre) 💭
➡️ Can become reduced in size
➡️ Struggles to distinguish between past and present threats
➡️ May not effectively calm the alarm system

The Prefrontal Cortex (Your Emotional Brake) 🛑
➡️ Often becomes underactive
➡️ Struggles to regulate emotions
➡️ Has difficulty switching off the alarm response

These changes explain common PTSD symptoms 🧠
➡️ Hypervigilance
➡️ Difficulty sleeping
➡️ Intrusive memories
➡️ Emotional numbness
➡️ Heightened stress response

The good news? With proper treatment, these brain changes can be reversed. Evidence shows that therapies like EMDR and CBT can help create new, healthier neural pathways.

If you're struggling with PTSD symptoms, I'm here to help.

2025 🗓️ | Finding Calm in Community

73% of UK adults have felt anxious in the past two weeks, with 1 in 5 experiencing anxiety most or all of the time.

But here's something powerful: being part of a supportive community can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms. Here's how:

🫂 Community support helps by:
• Creating a sense of belonging
• Reducing feelings of isolation
• Providing emotional support
• Offering shared experiences
• Building collective resilience

💭 When we're part of a community, we experience:
• Lower stress levels
• Decreased anxiety symptoms
• Improved mood
• Better coping mechanisms
• Increased self-worth

But if you're experiencing anxiety, joining or building community connections might feel overwhelming. Social anxiety, fear of judgment, or past experiences might make it challenging to take that first step.

Remember: It's okay to start small. Even minor connections - like a brief chat with a neighbour or joining an online support group - can make a difference.

If you're struggling with anxiety around community engagement, I'm here to help you build the confidence and tools you need.
