This review published in The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery, 2024 authored by Dr Emmaline Ashley & Dr Priyanka Chadha explores the multilayer injection technique - a modern approach to facial rejuvenation that considers the full complexity of facial anatomy and ageing.

WHAT IS THE MULTILAYER TECHNIQUE?
It refers to the strategic placement of dermal fillers across multiple facial planes - specifically the deep (e.g. supraperiosteal, deep fat compartments) and superficial layers (superficial fat, subdermal space) using rheologically appropriate fillers at each level.

WHY INJECT IN MULTIPLE PLANES?
✔️ Reconstruct structural support in deep tissue (e.g. bone, SOOF)
✔️ Enhance contour and surface aesthetics in superficial compartments
✔️ Improve facial dynamics and integration with movement
✔️ Minimise risks like lumpiness, migration or overfilling

IN PRACTICE:
👉 Deep injections use high G’, cohesive HA to restore foundational volume
👉 Superficial injections use malleable, lower-viscosity HA to smooth and sculpt
👉 Most cases combine needle (for depth and accuracy) with cannula (for safety and spread)
