Phobias often look simple on the surface. Fear of spiders. Fear of flying. Fear of speaking in public.

However, when we explore more deeply, we often find something else underneath; fear of being judged, of losing control, of something going wrong.

The actual ‘thing’ isn’t really the issue, it’s the meaning your mind has connected to it. That’s why talking about it isn’t always enough. We need to work with how your brain and body hold the pattern in place.

Not long ago, a client sat across from me, visibly embarrassed. “I know it sounds silly,” she said, “but I’m terrified of clowns.” She paused. “I mean, properly terrified. Even seeing one in a cartoon gives me that tight chest, sweaty hands feeling.”

While that might sound strange to some people, I hear stories like this all the time, and my client is far from alone. Coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) is surprisingly common, and lately, it’s back in the spotlight.

Many clients arrive thinking they’ve ‘tried everything’, and fears can often feel like they’ve taken root permanently. However, what I usually find in this instance is that clients haven’t worked at the level where the fear actually lives. That’s where real change happens.

Being phobic of something doesn’t mean you’re weak, and it’s not a question of willpower either. Phobias often start with a single moment, and what gets locked in isn’t logic, it’s emotion.

I’ve worked with military veterans who can’t get on planes. Senior executives who can’t speak in meetings. Parents who can’t enter a lift, even if their child is inside.

What happens is that our minds simply create a shortcut to say, “This isn’t safe,” and hold onto it, even when the danger has passed.

However, that response can be changed with the right approach.

Change doesn’t require strength, and you don’t need to ‘face your fear’ through force or exposure. It’s about helping your mind reprocess the fear in a way that feels safe.

Danny survived 9/11. He carried his boss down 55 flights of stairs. He walked out of the building just moments before it collapsed. He saw things no one should ever have to see.
For years, he lived with the trauma , the panic attacks, the anger, the guilt, the addiction. He tried everything… but nothing really touched the root cause of the problem.
Then we worked together.
What happened in that session changed everything. He met the version of himself that got him out of that tower. And for the first time, he saw himself not as broken… but as a hero.

Anxiety often shows up as your body’s way of keeping you safe, especially when it senses a potential threat.

It’s part of the “fight-or-flight” response:

🔷 A surge of adrenaline
🔷 Heightened focus
🔷 Faster breathing
🔷 Tense muscles

It sharpens your senses, preparing you to act, escape, or perform under pressure. In the right context, this response can even help, motivating you to prepare, plan, or solve problems. But when that alarm keeps going off, even when there’s no danger, it becomes exhausting.

Many of my clients describe being constantly on edge without knowing why — a general sense of unease they can’t shake. Often, this is not about a single event; it’s about what your nervous system has learned to expect over time. We work together to understand that pattern — and to gently change it.
