What are the four skills of DBT?

The four skills of dialectical behaviour therapy or DBT are tools designed to teach you how to live in the present, develop positive ways to deal with stress, self-regulate your emotions, and improve your relationships.

Our DBT Day Therapy Programme teaches the four core modules of mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation.

đŸ§© Mindfulness: Skills that help to ground you by keeping you in the present moment
đŸ§© Distress tolerance: Develop strategies to effectively manage emotional extremes and reduce the intensity of overwhelming emotions
đŸ§© Interpersonal effectiveness: Improve your ability to communicate effectively and implement respectful boundaries for yourself and others
đŸ§© Emotional regulation: Enables you to better understand your emotions and emotional response, identify triggers and develop emotional resiliency

In dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), ‘dialectical’ means acting through opposing forces or finding a balance between two things that seem opposite. For example, DBT works to help you accept yourself as you are, while also working towards positive change.

It’s about holding space for both acceptance and growth, because both are important.

Now, the DBT Day Therapy Programme at Nightingale Hospital is expanding and we are able to offer this programme to more patients with additional groups.

For the last two years, we have been delivering a DBT Day Therapy Programme. Over that time, we have had over 140 patients come through this programme and leave with the skills to better manage their emotions, take control of self-destructive behaviours, have healthy relationships and improve their overall quality of life.

Now, the DBT Day Therapy Programme is expanding and we are able to offer this programme to more patients with additional groups.

Delivered by specialist DBT therapists from DBT London, the DBT Day Therapy Programme takes place one-day-per-week course over 20 weeks at our therapy centre in Marylebone, London.

This programme covers four core modules to develop the skills needed to learn how to live in the present, manage stress, regulate emotions, and build healthier relationships.

“It’s important to know that recovery is possible. There is a path to healing for everyone, and the right therapy can make all the difference.”

Those are the words of former patient Tana, who has shared her story of deep limiting beliefs, the lessons she learned through treatment and what she wants others to know about healing.

For , we’d like to highlight the range of treatments we offer for alcohol addiction, including inpatient, outpatient, and day patient services.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, please remember: recovery is possible. While many people do recover from addiction with no professional treatment, and there is not only one path. However, the evidence is clear – professional treatment works and makes it more likely that people begin recovery and continue in recovery.

Re-introducing the Acute Inpatient Ground Floor Ward at Nightingale Hospital!

Last week, we officially re-opened our Acute Inpatient Ground Floor Ward, a space designed to reflect the very best in clinical experiences: gold-standard design, safe and thoughtful innovation, and a healing environment designed around the needs of our patients. Some of the innovations include:

▫Enhanced privacy, comfort and agency for our patients
▫Technological integration such as wireless charging and Smart TV's

This transformation was shaped through active consultation with our therapists, nurses, support staff, management, and most importantly our patients. We also could not have completed it without the skill and dedication of our contractors, GB BESPOKE JOINERY LTD - thank you.

For nearly 40 years, Nightingale Hospital has been a trusted place for patients seeking mental health support. This renovation of our Ground Floor ward will only enhance the support we can provide to our patients in the future.

Happy Pride Month from Nightingale! 🌈

As June comes to a close, we wrapped up Pride Month with colourful cupcakes and a joyful celebration with our team, honouring the importance of inclusion, equality, and visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community.

This month also served as a moment to reflect on the mental health barriers that the LGBTQIA+ community continues to face and celebrate the rich diversity that strengthens our workplace and our lives.

Thank you to all who came to celebrate with us!

Last night, we celebrated the Grand Re-Opening of our Acute Inpatient Ground Floor Ward – an incredible milestone that has been a year in the making.

In April 2024, we completed the renovation works on Bell Street, our outpatient and day patient therapy centre. Since then, the focus moved to the main hospital, with an ambitious five-phase plan to bring the best of gold-standard, safe and innovative mental health environments to our patients.

Over the year that has followed, we created a 'showroom', went through a rigorous consultation process with consultants, doctors, nurses, staff and most importantly, patients, to refine that room before rolling it out across the rest of the ward. Throughout this design and refinement process, patient safety and dignity, technological integration, and an environment which feels welcoming and conducive to recovery were non-negotiables. Fast forward to now, the ward represents just that.

Over the next four phases, we will keep this commitment. For nearly 40 years, Nightingale Hospital has continuously set new standards of excellence, and this project is no different.

Thank you to all those who made it possible – our leadership team, contractors, patients, consultants and staff. We are thrilled to see this space be used by our patients.

If you'd like to arrange a tour of the new space, please reach out to our team on the website: www.nightingalehospital.co.uk/businesses/business-enquiries/

Last night, we hosted our Consultant Summer SoirĂ©e – a chance for our team to connect, enjoy the warm weather with a BBQ dinner, and thank our consultant psychiatrists for everything they do.

We are incredibly proud to have such a strong group of consultants supporting our patients. The time, care and expertise they provide are invaluable to everyone who walks through our doors.

To all of our consultants, thank you for your hard work and dedication to our patients. It truly is an honour to work with you.
