Outside??

With more people working at home and the days getting shorter it's more important than ever to get outside for a few minutes each day.

Set an alarm this week to mark time for you to get outside whether that's minutes or hours.

Research suggests that vitamin D is at its strongest between 12 - 2pm so why not multi task - build up your vitamin D and get some fresh air at once.

PFPS??

Short for patellofemoral syndrome

What?

Let’s break it down - patella - knee and femoral - femur (your thigh bone) so it’s used if you have pain around your knee cap. People can be diagnosed with it when alternative injuries are ruled out.

There are many different causes but weakness of the surrounding muscles could be the cause pulling or pushing causing the leg or certain bones to rotate.

What should you do ?
Strengthen the muscles that surround the knee like the quads, glutes, calves. Start light with body weight squats and build up. Want to ask me something or get help? Ask away.

Progression

Is the exercise from home still going strong ?
But your in a rut?

Just because your at home doesn’t mean you can’t progress.
Yes you can be conventional and buy some weights but soon you might run out of them and you’ll end with a huge cupboard of weights once useful

Or......
You can progress what you do now.
take the eccentric (main movement) a lot slower than your way back to the start position. Ok when you squat down - take 4 counts to get there, hold that bottom for 2 seconds then up ya get in 1
Go to the end of range and pulse tiny movements. I’m thinking donkey kicks here
Increase the number you do
Change start position - if you’ve bagged a press up try starting by lying over a chair and do a downward press up

Or need more ideas - dm me and let’s have a chat

Hunch your shoulders when it’s cold ?

It’s something a lot of people do to try minimise the amount of surface the cold air can reach.

And whilst it keeps you warm for a few seconds after a little while you realise your neck and shoulders kill.

My challenge to you next time your cold is try realise if your shoulders are up by your ears and bring them back down. Move around a bit more instead to warm you up. Crack out a classic two step 💃🏻

If they hurt try these simple exercises to release those aching muscles:
shoulder rolls going forwards and backwards
Roll your neck starting at one shoulder down by your chest and up to the other shoulder
Lower one shoulder than normal and look at the opposite foot

If you want a video or further explanation just let me know.
Orrrrr come for a little massage. You know the drill.

WELLNESS

As we listen to the ever coming updates on Covid, it’s important to listen to yourself too.

Ask yourself how do you feel? How do you want to feel? What can you do to make the first feeling transition to the second?

This is a part of an overall feeling of wellness.

A state of being comfortable, healthy and happy. Taking a moment to be centred in the moment that’s passing by and switching off from the digital overload that can easily fill our days.

Why?
It’ll reignite your passion and inspire.

Let me help you focus your mind. Switch off and recenter you.

Just 30 minutes in a 1440 minute day.

Sorry?

Yep mind - body connection.

Heard of it?

It’s the way the body responds to the way you think, feel, act. So you don’t sleep because you’re stressed.

Your shoulders are up at your ears because you’re anxious.

Improving your health and having a balanced life will improve all elements of your daily living.

Book in for 30 or 60 minutes of complete ‘you’ time. Feel those problems fade and the tension melt away.

A balanced life after all is best.

TEXT NECK 📱

A now common injury caused by your head jutting out and rounded shoulders.

Why is this important ?

A head weighs around 5kg and when you flex your head forward to look down at your phone it increases the stress. The further down you look increases the muscular effort to support your posture.

Your neck flexed to 15 degrees increases the stress on your neck to 13kg

Increase that flexion to 60 degrees we’re talking your head weighing 30kg!!!

it’s due to overactive trapezius muscles, neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid, scalenes etc.) and underactive muscles not pulling their weight- deep neck flexors (I’m looking at you 👀)

A massage therapist can help relieve those tight shoulders, migraines and tension headaches. A step further I can help address the tight areas and strengthen the opposing muscle. If it sounds like you book in for a consultation / treatments.

Let’s get it sorted !

Can’t touch your feet when you try to stretch ?

Stretching and flexibility is something I’m working on to to help increase the range of motion of my joints. It can help increase your squat depth.

But how to become more flexible ?

First take this stretch I’m doing.

Sit up really high on your coccyx bones.

Reach towards your toes as much as possible.

When you’re there breath in and out (yep through your mouth) for 5 seconds. On the last exhale walk those fingers further forward a little.

Breath. Walk forwards and little by little you’ll get there.

Repeat 3 times and hold the last stretch for a little longer. 10 seconds this time.

Why?
Your muscles have pain receptors called Golgi Tendon Organs that respond to tension. Stretching increases the tension initially so they’ll fire up ready. By breathing they realise there’s no emergency and chill out again.

Trust me it works

ACTION

Maybe not including lights and cameras but you are still the main actor.

What if we looked at treatment as a preventative not as a necessity. That means we don’t have to breaking point until the problem is given a solution

That can be in any field of life - therapy, getting someone to help with your fitness goals, massages. You get the point.

Treat it when there is little need instead of when there’s a gaping problem.

Dm me today or book a massage let’s sort it out 💪🏻

Lower back pain 🤕

It’s the most common problem preventing people enjoy their sport effecting 50% of weightlifters as well as 60-80% of the general population.

In a weightlifting capacity a squat requires movement from 3 joints and if your ankles and calves are tight it falls to your pelvis to produce the work. A common problem is that the pelvis is too far forward because the hip flexors are too eager to do some and the core isn’t even trying to help. What does this look like ?? Well a very far forward lean in your upper body as you go down.

Can it be fixed?

Almost certainly.

Step 1- get that foam roller out and spend 10 mins rolling out those tight calf muscles and hip flexors. My tip - crossing your feet and flexing the bottom foot will help reach the smaller calf muscle

Step 2- geeettttt streeetching those hip flexors, latissimus dorsi and core muscle (erector spinae)

Step 3- try doing some isolated glute exercises and abs

See if that helps and if you need help you know where to find me xx

They see me rolling 🎵’
See what I did there 👀
Whilst it’s a marmite thing it’s an important thing for people to do. I’ll do a post soon giving allll the science and we can learn science thangs together 🤓

But buying one and knowing it’s right for you is hard. The pressure that can be applied by a foam roller is dependent on the diameter and density.

Whilst most foam rollers are a getting there right density and texture of the roller is cruical.
What do I mean?

The harder the roller and more textured jt is (more bumps like my scary friend) the greater the pressure applied to the area being rolled.

Soooo... my advice having not known this when I started.

Start with the roller with small bobbles whilst you work out how to do it (look at my previous posts for help) then move on to the scary looking bumpy one. That’s better suited when you know you can handle a greater pressure being applied.

If I had a favourite though it’s a massage ball especially my ball recommended. Yes it’s soft and not textured but can get in all the nooks and crannies in my shoulders when they get cranky. That with the fact I can take it anywhere makes it a massage therapists best friend.

Or if you’re still reading just book yourself a massage with me
