Speleotherapy is a respiratory therapy that consists of long stays in the microclimate of karsts and salt mines. Speleotherapy is also known as halotherapy. Halotherapy comes from the Greek word ‘halos’ which means ‘salt’ and ‘therapy’ which means ‘treatment’.

The most famous speleotherapy clinic was built in 1968 in the village of Solotvino, in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. The underground admissions office was located at the existing Solotvinsky salt mine at a depth of 300 meters. The treatment block of the clinic was designed to hold 250 beds.
