Dr Nick Gompertz has been an NHS doctor for 30 years and a GP for 21 years.

In our latest Respiratory Futures feature, he highlights concerns over the accuracy of the widely used Fingertip Pulse Oximeters, particularly in patients with black or brown skin.

These devices became commonplace throughout COVID-19 as a quick and easy way to measure a patient's blood oxygen levels. Dr Gompertz calls for caution and better education with clear warnings on the use of the tool.

A pilot audit of the Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) dataset has found variation in the use of EBUS across the UK.

This audit highlights the need for national data collection to provide benchmarking for UK hospitals and has proven that the current data collection is scalable.

A Christmas message to members from our Chair, Professor Richard Russell:

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach the festive season, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone we have worked with throughout 2025. Whether in clinical practice, research, education, or policy, your dedication continues to improve the lives of people with respiratory disease across the UK and beyond.

This has also been a year of meaningful progress toward the Society's strategic objectives. Together, we have strengthened our focus on improving the quality of respiratory care, advanced our work on evidence-based clinical standards, and expanded education and training opportunities for the respiratory community. Our support for high-quality research and our engagement in national respiratory policy have further positioned BTS as a leading voice shaping the future of respiratory health. Our Summer Meeting continues to grow, and our flagship Winter Meeting was arguably the best yet.

As we take a moment to pause, I hope the holiday season offers you time to rest, reflect, and reconnect with those who matter most. On behalf of the Society, I wish you a peaceful Christmas and a healthy, fulfilling New Year.

Warmest regards,
Professor Richard Russell
Chair, British Thoracic Society

The importance of supporting and encouraging healthcare professionals to explore a research career is something that we believe in strongly, which is why we are thrilled to be partnering with Asthma + Lung UK to fund grants in respiratory-related research.

This fund is for healthcare professionals who would like to apply for a PhD (or equivalent qualification, e.g. MD) but currently do not have the time, resources, or support needed to develop an application.

Professor James Chalmers recently took up the Rhodes Professorship of Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford. Previously, he served as the Asthma + Lung UK Chair of Respiratory Research at the University of Dundee and as a Consultant Respiratory Physician. He was Chair of the British Thoracic Society Science and Research Committee from 2022-2024.

We look forward to working with them both closely over the next few years.

In preparation for a national audit in 2026, we have conducted a pilot audit of the Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) dataset.

A deep-dive data analysis found variation in the use of EBUS across the UK, and an audit will be key to providing benchmarking data for a national quality assurance process.
