Did you know there are 4 stages to the menopause, and it can start earlier than you think. It isn’t just hot flushes and a change in your cycle.

Perhaps your hair isn’t as thick as it used to be, or your skin is drier than normal. Maybe you’re finding it harder to maintain your normal body weight, feeling tired all the time or having trouble sleeping.

These could all be signs of pre and peri-menopause.

For women entering this life stage, weight gain, rising blood sugars and insulin imbalance become important risk factors for other conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Studies suggest that if we have more balanced hormones during our menstruating years, then we may experience fewer symptoms during the perimenopause and menopause. So it’s never too early to start looking at ways we can support our hormonal health through nutrition.

If you would like to understand how to prepare for the menopause and support your body through it, we have a new 4 week Menopause Transition Nutrition & Lifestyle Programme starting in April.

As part of the programme you will learn:

~How to track the menopause transition using your own cycle
~The importance of progesterone and oestrogen, it’s impact on weight gain & energy levels and how to support the balance
~How to eat to support the menopause transition
~How to make tweaks to your own diet and lifestyle to support your body
~Tips to support sleep and stress

Miso soup is just what the doctor ordered if you feel like your body is in need of a little TLC. A power bowl of probiotics (another word for gut friendly bacteria), it helps to support our microbiome, which in turn helps to balance our hormones. This means better mood, energy, improved immunity, improved insulin resistance and improved weight management.

Adding Nori and spring onions give this soup some added crunch and flavour, while also giving you a boost of B vitamins, iodine, magnesium and iron.

Visit https://www.doctorbodywell.com/post/probiotic-miso-soup for more details and the recipe if you fancy giving your gut a probiotic boost.

More and more studies are showing the importance of the gut microbiome on our health. Probiotic (another word for gut friendly bacteria) foods contain beneficial organisms that help to colonise our gut so we can help keep our microbiome healthy. The microbiome is the collection of microbes, such as....

Did you know insulin is a hormone that affects us all? It helps regulate how much sugar is circulating in our blood stream and is very closely linked to our hunger and appetite levels.

Disruption to our blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity can result in
- Weight gain around our middle
- Inability to lose weight
- Hunger
- Sugar cravings
- Fatigue
- For women, it can impact on menstrual health

When our body stops responding to insulin, we call this insulin resistance, and the glucose from the food we eat remains in the bloodstream and doesn’t enter our cells where it’s needed to carry out daily functions. To compensate, our body enters starvation mode and stores more glucose as fat, which in itself can cause more insulin resistance, and so a vicious circle starts, making it harder to lose weight.

This doesn’t happen overnight but exposure overtime to certain factors can increase our risk.

So what can imbalance our insulin? Poor food choices such as refined carbohydrates, and lifestyle factors that are common in our hectic lives such as stress and poor sleep.

If you feel like you might need some support in understanding how to balance your blood sugar levels and improve your insulin sensitivity, drop us a message and we can have a chat.
