AT with Kathy Hulme

AT with Kathy Hulme Alexander Technique helps you to re-evaluate your day to day movement, teaching you how to prevent harmful habits and discover easier ways to move.

I have spent my adult life playing a variety of instruments and singing. This interest in music led me to train as a Kodály music educator and I have spent almost 20 years teaching music in primary schools in London. I constantly suffered from voice strain problems. Learning piano I found that I suffered from pain, numbness and tingling in my hands and arms. All this was on top of a lifetime of so

reness and stiffness in my upper back and shoulders. I saw myself as someone who just didn’t have good posture, never athletic and doomed to stoop more and more in old age. I have tried many forms of treatment for my various problems and over the years found that the Alexander Technique was the thing that seemed to offer a global solution. Whenever I had found the money to give myself some lessons I got a tantalising glimpse of the possibility of a life free from voice strain and sore shoulders and wrists. My three years of training (STAT certified training courses minum) have allowed me time to really make the changes to my use of my body that allow me now to teach and sing without strain, to practise the piano without getting numb fingers and to enjoy the feeling of spring in the body when it is used well.

Yay! Alexander Technique getting a mention in the press: Mann believes all schools should teach the Alexander technique – a series of movements designed to foster the efficient use of muscles – but says it is never too late to learn. “By undoing patterns of adverse neuromuscular spinal reflexes, students learn to reduce joint and muscle strains in everyday activities,” he says. “Research in the British Medical Journal showed that the effects of AT reduced chronic back pain and disability more than physiotherapy and were preventive one year later.”

Back injuries are extremely common, yet often misunderstood. Here are the simple steps you can take to avoid discomfort, from exercising your core to getting a good night’s sleep

Slouching isn't lazy!

It's almost universally accepted that slouching is A BAD THING!

But in truth, there is no evidence that slouching is any worse for you than sticking the chest out and overarching the back (think of the classic Sergeant Major posture).

For more info on what slouching does, and how over-correcting can make it worse, read this Friday's blog 📧

Remember to stay Hydrated!

"Massage can be dehydrating. The manipulation of muscles can deplete them of water. By drinking water, you can rehydrate your muscles for the same reason you’d drink water after exercise and other forms of exertion because when the muscles are worked, they can lose water and electrolytes."

Spend a moment thinking about your tongue.

Where is it lying in your mouth?

Does it feel tight or relaxed?

Do you habitually press it to the roof of your mouth?

Now think of a sponge, imagine gripping it in your hand, compressing it so that it is enclosed by your fingers.

Imagine letting go of that sponge. See it spring out in every direction in your mind's eye.

What if you let your tongue go so that it releases forward into your mouth, occupying the space behind your teeth?

You don't have to feel any actual movement of your tongue, and you definitely don't need to push your tongue forward, just think that you are letting your tongue go so that it can fill your mouth cavity.

Now breathe through your nose, and enjoy the easy passage of breath through your airways!

Why Alexander Technique?

Alexander Technique is education.

Expect to be challenged and occasionally frustrated and to be given homework. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. This is deep work to bring about changes in the way you do things in order to develop ease and avoid injury.

One lesson can bring about huge changes, although it generally takes time.

In my Alexander work the hands are used in what might be considered a passive way but the hands are used to 'listen' to the musculature under the skin, to feel if and how the joints are responding to the work, to note the rhythms of the breath.

Ideal for: Athletes, Musicians, Artists, and anyone with misaligned posture!

Why Massage?

Massage is a treatment.

If you want to take a break from your busy life, to lie there and not have to think and end up feeling relaxed and invigorated then massage is the thing to go for.

Regular massage can keep stress and tension at bay and undo aches and pains from repetitive activities at work, sports, or performance.

A massage might also help relieve muscle spasms in order to prepare for a series of Alexander lessons.

In my massage work my hands are active, moving muscles with a variety of techniques, flowing (effleurage), focussed (petrissage), and percussive, all to move muscles and stimulate blood and lymph flow.
