A new antiviral drug to treat symptomatic Covid has been approved by the MHRA.

Paxlovid is intended for use soon after symptoms develop in people at high risk of developing severe disease.

Paxlovid is the second new antiviral pill to be approved for Covid-19 in the UK after another drug called molnupiravir, was approved by the MHRA back in November 2021.

The first pill designed to treat symptomatic Covid has been approved in the UK by the MHRA.

molnupiravir will be given twice a day to vulnerable patients recently diagnosed with the disease.

Molnupiravir, developed by the US drug companies Merck, Sharp and Dohme (MSD) and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, is the first dedicated oral antiviral medication for Covid in the UK.

This breakthrough again marks the UK as a leader in healthcare treatment.
