Organic x Conventional foods 🌱🌍🍏

Often, I hear people and patients say that they would like to buy more organic foods but find them too expensive and have concerns about the health implications of consuming non-organic foods. So, let's delve deeper into this topic.

Organic foods are grown using natural methods and avoid synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, GMOs, and antibiotics in livestock farming.

It's true that eating organic is great for health, as it reduces exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and promotes environmental sustainability🌍. But when it comes to health, some studies have found only minimal nutritional differences between organic and conventional fruits and vegetables.

Organic foods are typically more expensive than conventional options, sometimes the price difference is just a few pennies, but in some cases, it can be double or even more💰. And organic foods might not last long since they don't have preservatives used in conventional foods to last longer. Plus, the quality of organic foods can vary and not all organic foods are of equally high quality.🌿🍽️

So what I would say is, If you have the budget and preference for organic foods, go for it. But it's important to balance your priorities and budget when making the decision. there are strict regulations that limit pesticide use in conventional farming, so non-organic options could still be a good choice for many people, especially if budget is a concern. It's all about what works best for you and your situation, like eating your fruits and veggies every day no matter where they come from. 💪🏻🥦🛒

My Journey Towards a Plant-Based Lifestyle 🌱

It all began after my return from Ireland in 2017 when I discovered I was lactose intolerant after A LOT of symptoms and bad experiences. At this time I had already reduced my meat consumption over the years due to disliking the taste (I used to say that it tasted like “animal”). Cutting out dairy, especially cheese was a big challenge for me, given that I come from Brazil. I persisted for a long time, until I ended up in the hospital, unable to eat for over a week. It was a wake-up call to change and that was my first step towards embracing a plant-based lifestyle.

Alongside this, my husband introduced me to a vegan burger restaurant in São Paulo, and I was blown away by the incredible flavours, It was the best burger I had ever tasted. Additionally, during my time in college, I had a class about carbon footprint and nutrition (all of this was happening during the same period, which lasted about a year for the complete transition). This sparked my concern and led me to want to understand more about vegetarian nutrition as we have zero content about it in the nutrition degree.

Then the pandemic began, and as soon as I found out that I would have to stay home for a long time, I knew it was the perfect moment to dedicate myself even more to this choice since I would have time to cook and discover new recipes. In May 2020, I decided to give it a try and commit to it for a while, without pressure and without thinking it would be a permanent decision. As someone who enjoys studying and understanding all the details, even before completing my undergraduate degree, I started my postgraduate studies in vegetarian nutrition, which opened my eyes even more and gave me more reasons for this choice to become permanent. Initially, it was motivated by health, but then the environment, and animal welfare all came together, and now I only regret not starting this journey sooner.
