Lactic acidosis:
Also called grain overload. excessive ingestion of fermentable carbohydrates, more lactic acid present in rumen.
Etiology:
- Excessive ingestion of highly fermentable carbohydrates main source grains
Other sources like apples, potatoes, carrots, sugar beat, sucrose solution, bread, rice etc
- more toxic grains are wheat, barley and maize
Clinical signs and symptoms:
- Anorexia
- rapid respiration
- Ruminal stasis
- Dehydration
- Splashing sound in rumen
- Colic
DIAGNOSIS:
- On basis of clinical signs and history
- Laboratory Test
* Determination of pH of rumen liquor
*Protozoal motility test
(1) Medical Treatment
- to correct systemic acidosis ie Blood pH
a) Sodium bicarbonate 5% 5L/450 kg IV in 1st hour
b) sodium bicarbonate 1.3% 150ml/kg IV in next 12 hours
c) NaHCO3 1g/kg orally to coreect rumen pH
d) Ringer lactate solution IV
e) NSAIDs
* Flunixin meglumine 1.1 -2.2 mg/kg
* Meloxicam 0.2mg/kg
f) Calcium borogluconate Calcium increase rumen motility
(2) Surgical Treatment
- rumenectomy all content are evacuated
(3) Stomach tube
Passed and gastric lavage is performed
Emergency Rx;
Trocar and canola
