Assessing and treating patients is a bit like playing chess.

Every time we do something, there is a counter move, which we have to try and predict.

For example – we do nail surgery, we have to be aware of all of the potential things that can occur afterwards such as regrowth and healing times.

When we issue an orthosis, we are thinking about the potential things that might occur afterwards, like the changes in the way that you walk, or how long it will take for the positive effects to occur.

All this comes with experience and from seeing, touching and assessing thousands of feet over the years!

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the name given to describe a group of neurological conditions that affect a child's ability to co-ordinate movement, and can have an effect on cognitive development.

Children that have cerebral palsy will find muscle control and movement difficult to control as they develop.

It occurs as the result of either injury to the brain or abnormalities of the brain, which happen either before, during or quickly after birth.

Typically the damage to the brain associated with cerebral palsy occurs during the baby's development in the womb, however, it is also possible for it to occur later, up until the age of three when the brain is developing

Podiatry has a great role in being able to help with improvements in patient's walking and gait, and also to manage the often painful hard skin that forms from altered pressure on the feet.

Why do we love our reviews?

Well, they make us feel good for start.

And it's great when people take the time to feedback on how we made them feel and how we helped them to solve their problems.

That ^^ we truly appreciate.

If you've ever visited the clinic or had treatment from us, we'd love it if you would give us a review.

Not only does it give us a nice feeling, it also helps loads of people to make the right decision about their treatment, by reading feedback from real people.

Check out our reviews on Google and Facebook.

Occasionally we’ll have people come in and ask about the hairs on their toes.

They may be concerned about how it looks.

Or perhaps they want to know if it’s “normal”.

Well, hair growth is one of those things that we look for when doing a visual assessment of your feet. The presence of hair is a useful indicator of your lower limb circulation.

Now don’t get me wrong - it’s one of many tests and is subjective - but it’s a useful measure for us.

That doesn’t mean that no hair is an issue, because we’re all different, but it’s a good reminder that hair on your toes is not a bad thing.

Did you know that bamboo takes five years to grow?

In that time, the farmer need to water and fertilise the ground where it has been planted every day.

After five years it then emerges and will grow 90 feet tall in five weeks!

So what’s this have to do with podiatry?

Well, there are so many things that you do as part of your treatment that don’t seem to reap rewards.

Whether that’s applying cream.

Or treating fungal nails.

Or exercises for an injury.

Often you do these things nothing seems to happen, but then suddenly things change.

There’s a lot of patience and trust that goes into this, but we work with a lot of people and we see this often.

Sometimes things take time, and faith and patience and we’d be delighted to guide you on that journey.

There's something about the work we do that always attracts a bit of humour...

"Someone told me I have athlete's foot, but I'm not an athlete... does that mean they are wrong?"

Not necessarily.

I mean they could be wrong (we've not seen your feet after all)!

But you don't need to be an athlete to get it.

The big question here is - what is athlete's foot?

Let's keep this simple.

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of the skin that affects the feet.

You know when you get that redness and itchiness between your little toe and the one next to it?

That could be athlete's foot.

Or that dry skin of the soles of your feet that just doesn't go away despite moisturising?

Yep, that could be it too.

It's one of those things that isn't always obvious, but can lead to other problems.

You may get a crack in the skin that leads to some bacteria sneaking in, and if you're circulation isn't good, well...

Bad stuff can happen.

Woah! Talking about chilblains already?

It's still September.

That's like mentioning the "C" word before December!

But, you'd be surprised when chilblains can turn up.

Sudden changes in temperature from warm to cool and vice versa, can encourage these pesky things to come along.

Managing the environment to avoid these changes in temperature is key, but even with the best will in the world, sometimes they can become a problem.

What kind of problems are we talking about Ratna?

Well, probably the biggest problem is the risk of chilblains becoming open and leading to infection and ulceration.

That ^^ is not nice at all, and with all wounds, they take time to heal.

Check out the tips in the graphic and if you have any problems get in touch and see how we can help.
