Mastering the STARR Method for Psychology Interviews
Aspiring Clinical Psych Workshop

Aspiring clinical psychologists are often told what interview panels are looking for, but not always how to communicate it clearly under pressure. This focused workshop is designed to change that.

Facilitated by Heema Gokani (Trainee Clinical Psychologist), this session will explore how the STARR method can be used as a flexible, reflective framework to support confident and authentic interview responses for psychology roles and the DClinPsy route.

What you will gain:
• A clearer understanding of how structured thinking supports focused, confident communication
• Stronger skills in articulating your learning, growth, and impact in a reflective and relevant way
• Increased confidence responding under pressure without sounding scripted

What comes to mind when you think about uncertainty? Especially during the journey to becoming a clinical psychologist?

Our next ACPsych Journal Club explores Barry Mason’s influential article Towards Positions of Safe Uncertainty. It’s a piece that encourages us to move away from rushing into answers and instead develop a reflective stance rooted in curiosity.

For aspiring psychologists, this mindset is central to clinical work, supervision, and coping with the unpredictability of the DClinPsy process.

Across four weeks, we’ll explore:
• sitting with the unknown
• balancing expertise with curiosity
• noticing when we slip into unsafe certainty or unsafe uncertainty
• developing a grounded, reflective approach to professional growth

It’s a space for thoughtful discussion, critical thinking, and genuine development.

Join the conversation inside the ACPsych Hub — and start building your reflective stance.

A population refers to the entire group of individuals or items that a research study aims to understand or draw conclusions about. It can include all members of a specific group, such as all high school seniors, or a larger demographic. Researchers often use samples from the population to make inferences about the larger group, as studying the entire population is not always feasible.

Begin every answer with a single framing sentence. This acts like a signpost for the panel, helping them follow your direction and making your answer feel coherent from the outset. It also helps you remain focused and avoid drifting into long context. This structure supports clarity and confidence.

Information Processing Theory strengthens Assessment by helping you understand cognitive load, memory and processing difficulties. It enriches Communication through clearer structuring of information. It supports Interventions by guiding pacing and scaffolding. It strengthens Formulation by considering cognitive strengths and limitations. It enhances Personal and Professional Development as you reflect on how clients process information. This theory demonstrates thoughtful adaptation across SCRIPTED FLAG. Set up a free ACPsych Hub account to explore resources and begin your journey today.

The null hypothesis serves as a starting point for statistical testing. It suggests that no significant effect or relationship exists between variables. Researchers aim to gather evidence to reject the null hypothesis, providing support for the alternative hypothesis. This process is essential for establishing causal links in experimental research.

Many candidates give too much context and not enough psychological depth. It helps to keep your context purposeful and short so panels can focus on your understanding, not the backstory. When you reduce unnecessary detail, you give more space to show the skills, reflections, and clinical reasoning that courses are looking for.

This shift alone can significantly strengthen the quality of your interview responses.
