Meningitis in the News – What You Should Know

You may have seen recent news coverage about meningitis cases in the UK. While headlines can sometimes feel alarming, it’s important to remember that meningitis remains relatively rare.

Health authorities occasionally report small clusters of cases, which helps doctors stay alert and ensure people know the symptoms to watch for. Early recognition and prompt medical care are key, and vaccinations continue to provide strong protection against several common causes of meningitis.

If you ever experience symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, sensitivity to light, or a stiff neck, it’s always sensible to seek medical advice promptly.

Staying informed and up to date with recommended vaccinations is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family.

Yesterday was World Kidney Day, a global reminder of how vital our kidneys are to overall health 💙

Your kidneys quietly filter waste, balance fluids, regulate blood pressure, support bone health, and keep your body in balance every single day. Yet kidney disease often develops silently, with no obvious symptoms until it’s advanced.

You may be at higher risk if you have:
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• A family history of kidney disease
• Recurrent urinary infections
• Autoimmune conditions
• Long-term medication use
• Persistent fatigue, swelling, or changes in urination

At our clinic, we can assess your kidney health through blood tests, urine testing, blood pressure checks, and personalised advice — helping detect problems early when they are most treatable.

✨ Early detection saves kidneys.
✨ Prevention protects long-term health.

If you’ve never had your kidney function checked or you have risk factors… now is the perfect time.

🚨 7 Symptoms You Should NEVER Ignore

Most serious conditions don’t start dramatically.
They start quietly… and get dismissed.

If you experience any of the following, don’t “wait and see”:

• Chest pain
• Sudden severe headache
• Shortness of breath
• Unexplained weight loss
• A persistent high fever (especially in a child)
• A new lump or swelling
• Ongoing symptoms that just don’t feel right

Early assessment can make all the difference.

At Dr Wayne Cottrell & Co, we offer same-day GP appointments in Canary Wharf for adults and children. No long waits. No delays. Just clear answers and a plan.

Measles cases are rising across parts of England.

Measles is not just a mild childhood illness. It is highly contagious and can spread very easily through coughs and sneezes. In some cases, it can lead to serious complications including chest infections, seizures, brain inflammation and hospitalisation.

The good news? It is preventable.

The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) offers excellent protection.

Who should consider vaccination?

• Children who have not yet received both doses of the MMR
• Teenagers who missed vaccinations in childhood
• Adults unsure of their vaccination status
• Healthcare workers
• Anyone born after 1970 who has not had two documented doses
• Individuals travelling abroad
• Those living or working with vulnerable groups

Babies under 1 year, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications — which is why community immunity matters.

If you’re unsure whether you or your child are up to date, check your red book or speak to your GP.

We offer MMR vaccinations and catch-up schedules at the clinic.

Not all health issues shout. Some whisper.

We often wait for severe pain or obvious symptoms before seeking help… but many conditions start subtly.

Here are a few silent signs you shouldn’t ignore:

• Persistent fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Chest tightness or pressure
• Unexplained weight changes
• Changes in bowel habits
• Ongoing low mood or brain fog

These may be nothing serious — but they can also be early indicators of heart disease, hormonal imbalance, thyroid issues, anaemia, diabetes, anxiety disorders, and more.

Early detection changes outcomes.

At Dr. Wayne Cottrell & Co, our private GP service offers:
✔️ Same-day appointments
✔️ Comprehensive health checks
✔️ Blood tests & screening
✔️ Calm, confidential consultations

If something feels “off”, trust that instinct.

Your health is not an inconvenience. It’s a priority.
