💥Sirsasana - headstand - supposed king of asanas!
🤸🏽‍♀️Develops upper body strength, proprioception - and confidence!
💪Some body weight is transferred through the more delicate vertebrae of the cervical spine; but much is also borne by arms and shoulders. Headstand is an arm balance!
🐬I never used to practise headstand - I was happy in class to stick with preparatory exercises like Dolphin, and shoulderstand for inversion
📅Then in the pandemic lockdown of 2020 it became my daily challenge
🌱It's about regular practice, incrementally building the strength and muscle memory needed to come into (and out of) the pose safely with full control. Never jump into a headstand!
🐌It took almost 20 years of intermittent yoga practice to get here. My challenge now is Scorpion, with back arched and head lifted! Maybe it'll take another 20 years - or more - and that's all fine!

🎈Our amazing breath!
🌍There's a simple way to hack the parasympathetic nervous system - any time, anywhere
🌱This can put your body in a relaxed "rest and digest" state whenever you need a boost of calm
💫Try it next time you feel stressed - or if you can't sleep. Use it in your yoga practice to relax deeper into the asana
1️⃣Be still
2️⃣Gently close your eyes
3️⃣Inhale for a count of 4
4️⃣Exhale for a count of 8
5️⃣Repeat for minute or two - or longer
6️⃣If that's too slow try 3-6
👉🏾Take it further...
🌳Let your belly and ribs expand and contract fully with each breath

🌲Work towards slower breathing, 5-10 or 6-12

🪴Introduce brief pauses or longer holds between in and out breaths

🫁Every day we take as many as 30000 breaths - a billion in a lifetime
🍉Each breath nourishes every cell of our body
⚓And it's always there as an anchor to the present moment, to focus on to quieten a chattering mind
🌞What a gift!
🏵️We meditate on Zoom every Friday at 730am. All welcome, including beginners

🌱Come and find out at my Thursday 745-845 pm classical hatha yoga class in Clapton E5 and Live online!
🌚After warming up we explore variations on 12 key asana (yoga poses) - a good mix of forward, back and side bends, balances and inversions
💫These stretch and strengthen the whole body, move the spine in every possible direction and develop physical resilience and balance
🏵️ In turn this leads to mental strength, resilience and balance - and feelings of peace
☸️This series is said to activate sequentially each of 7 chakras (mystic energy centres), unblocking the flow of prana (life force) and ultimately bringing us to a superconscious state
💫Here's the series!
1. Sirsasana - headstand
2. Sarvangasana - shoulderstand
3. Halasana - plough
4. Matsyasana - fish
5. Paschimotahanasa - seated forward fold
6. Bhujangasana - cobra
7. Salabhasana - locust
8. Dhanurasana - bow
9. Ardha matsyendrasana - half spinal twist
10. Kakasana or mayurasana - crow or peacock
11. Pada hastasana - standing forward fold
12. Trikonasana - triangle
👉🏾All asana can be modified for beginners, improvers and every body's unique capabilities regardless of experience, age or health and injury
🌞This series was popularised in the West by disciples of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh
