🌀 Refractive Secondary Lens Implant, also known as piggyback intraocular lens implantation (IOL), is only suitable for people who have already had cataract surgery or lens replacement surgery with lens implant and are having to wear glasses or contact lenses for clear vision.

The purpose of this surgery is to provide spectacle independence for most activities.

The surgery involves the insertion of a second lens implant in the eye that sits on top of the lens implanted after cataract or lens replacement surgery.

Secondary IOL options include:

💠 Monofocal
💠 Multifocal
💠 Toric
💠 Multifocal toric models

A secondary lens implant allows your ophthalmologist (eye specialist) to further correct refractive errors.

According to BioMed Central, this procedure is more accurate than an IOL exchange when treating residual refractive errors after cataract surgery.

👁️ There are different types of corneal transplants and not all involve replacing the entire cornea.

Corneal transplants restore vision when the cornea becomes scarred, swollen, or cloudy. But depending on the location and extent of the damage, your ophthalmologist may recommend a specific type of procedure tailored to your needs:

🔹 Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) – a full-thickness transplant that replaces all layers of the cornea; ideal for severe damage or scarring.
🔹 Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) – preserves the healthy inner layer and replaces only the front layers, often used in conditions like keratoconus.
🔹 Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK/DMEK) – a thin-layer transplant that replaces just the inner endothelial layer; perfect for treating Fuchs’ dystrophy and similar conditions.
🔹 Keratoprosthesis (KPro) – an artificial cornea for patients with multiple failed transplants or severe eye disease, offering hope when other treatments are not possible.

Each of these procedures is designed to restore clear, comfortable vision while minimising risk and recovery time.

✨ If you're living with corneal disease or blurred vision that doesn't improve with glasses, a corneal transplant may be the next step.

Do you see small dots, squiggly lines, rings or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision? 🕸️

We call these eye floaters. They will still be there if you blink, though they may become easy to ignore. Floaters may look black or grey, like a shadow.

💥 Flashes are brief flashes of light, similar to camera flashes, over your vision. They are sometimes mistaken for a streak of lightning. You may experience floaters alongside flashes of light or separately.

Flashing lights are more common if you suffer from migraines and are usually associated with headaches. If you only see flashing lights, you may want to speak to your doctor before speaking to an eye specialist.

You should also speak to a doctor if you have blurred vision or dizziness.

😣 Recurrent corneal erosion (RCE) affects the outer surface layer of the cornea (corneal epithelium).

The corneal epithelium protects the cornea from foreign objects (things that shouldn't be there). In RCE, this outer layer is weak and loose due to poor adhesion to the rest of the cornea.

The loose epithelium ‘rips open’ at the points of weakness, especially when waking up, resulting in severe pain.

People with RCE usually experience pain after waking up, which can range from mild to severe. Other symptoms include:

🔴 Redness
💧 Watery eyes
🌫️ Blurred vision
🥺 Irritated, dry eyes
⚡ Moderate to severe pain
🌟 Light sensitivity (photophobia)
🔍 Feeling like something’s scratching your eye

Your symptoms may lessen throughout the day and recur the next morning.

If you are experiencing symptoms of recurrent corneal erosion, get in touch today on 0330128161 to organise diagnostic tests.

🔔 LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction procedure and the most common type of laser eye surgery.

LASIK can be used to correct the following conditions you may experience:

✴️ Myopia (short-sightedness) – this a condition in which your ability to see far away distances is affected
✴️ Hyperopia (long-sightedness) – this a condition in which your ability to see up close is affected
✴️ Astigmatism – this is a condition that can cause you to develop a rugby ball-shaped eyeball that can cause you to develop blurry vision
✴️ Presbyopia – this a condition that can affect your ability to read visually

If you suffer from any of these refractive errors, speak to one of our consultant ophthalmologists (eye specialists) to discuss whether LASIK surgery may be the right treatment for you.

💦 Watery eyes (epiphora) occur if you have too many tears or they do not drain properly.

You may also experience blurry vision, irritated or sore eyes, stickiness, and dry eyes, depending on the cause.

Many people experience watery eyes, and they usually resolve without intervention.

However, you should speak to a doctor if your symptoms continue.

📷 Photo-Therapeutic Keratectomy is a type of laser surgery used to treat corneal conditions or injuries affecting the cornea outer surface layer (epithelium).

The laser we use is similar to the one we use for vision correction. However, we use PTK to treat painful erosions or abnormalities instead of correcting vision.

🔅 To determine if this procedure is necessary, our ophthalmologist may perform an eye examination and several other investigations, depending on the cause.

These include corneal topography, ocular coherence tomography (OCT), anterior segment OCT, and full refraction.

If you often experience pain due to recurrent corneal erosion, you should not let it continue.

🧫 Naevus is the technical term for a mole, so an eye naevus is similar to a mole on your skin. The plural of naevus is naevi.

Most are usually harmless and asymptomatic. However, they do need to be monitored because there is a slight chance they can develop into melanoma (a type of cancer).

💡 Keratoconus treatment will depend on the stage of keratoconus. If you have stable keratoconus, we may use ICL implants to improve your vision.

Treatments:

*️⃣ Glasses and contact lenses
*️⃣ Corneal cross-linking
*️⃣ Refractive cross-linking
*️⃣ Corneal ring segments
*️⃣ Corneal transplants

Cross-linking increases rigidity in the cornea. It may help to slow or halt the progressive thinning and bulging associated with the disease.

If you have keratoconus and are interested in discussing your treatment options, we recommend booking a consultation with our eye specialist.

💠 Yes and no! An implantable contact lens is intended to be a long-term solution for vision correction.

Once implanted, it remains securely in place inside the eye and does not require daily removal or cleaning like traditional contact lenses.

☝️ However, while it’s designed to stay in place indefinitely, the ICL can be safely removed or replaced by our eye surgeons if necessary – offering both stability and flexibility over time.

If you are interested in ICL surgery or are not suitable for laser eye surgery, take control of your vision with implantable contact lenses.

Allow our expert eye specialists to assess your eyes and provide educated guidance.
