The Portland Hospital now uses Ortholove Swelling Leg Elevators to ensure our patients have the most comfortable recovery and we know that post operative elevation helps reduce swelling and enhances healing. Whilst pillows to elevate legs are fine, they are unstable and we can never find them when we need them. It’s a pleasure to work at a place that offers the highest and safest standard of care.

On Behalf of the TARVA Study Group it was a huge surprise and honour to receive the Roger A. Mann Award for an Outstanding Clinical Study at the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society 2022 in Quebec City. TARVA stands for Total Ankle Replacement Versus Arthrodesis (ankle fusion) and compared the clinical and cost effectiveness of these two treatments and the results showed both treatments are safe and clinically and cost effective. Further details can be seen at https://www.anklearthritis.co.uk

The study was pulled off by dedicated researchers from 17 NHS Trusts thanks to the support of NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) to the sum of close to $3m.

Congratulations to Emma Raducanu.

Every now and then a Star is Born. It was amazing to see British Emma Raducanu’s moment at Wimbledon on Saturday 3rd July 2021 when as an 18 year old ranked 179, she beat 37th Seed Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the third round. Although her Wimbledon journey ended in tears, having to medically retire in the next game, the third round victory was her moment of transition to stardom. Just over 2 months later she crushes the competition to become the first ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam title, the US Open on September 11 2021. We are in awe of your talent, composure and resilience (especially after the knee injury at 5-3 in the second set).

On International Nurses Day, it’s important to pay tribute to the amazing and selfless team of nurses that provide care, compassion, comfort, and hope to all of our patients - a more effective medicine than any pill, or stroke of a surgeon’s knife. Thank you from the entire LAAC team.
