CRACKING START TO THE DAY FOR CARE HOME RESIDENTS IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Days get off to a cracking start for residents at a Huntington care home after the arrival of five chicks as part of a new therapy initiative.

The residents of Abbey Healthcare’s Cromwell House Care Home, the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell in 1599, watched as the chicks hatched and after feeding and caring for them for only a day have decided to make them permanent residents.

Sylvia Duz, Manager of the 66-bed home on High Street, said: “Recent research shows how hens can improve wellbeing and reduce any loneliness and depression by giving people a chance to sense, feel and express their emotions and affection.

“So, this was a therapeutic initiative that we wanted to offer for the benefit of our residents, and we saw the impact straight away.

“The residents were fascinated watching the eggs waiting for them to hatch and then seeing them turn into something. It started many afternoon discussions about what came first, the chicken or the egg?

“Once they’d hatched everyone wanted to see them and be involved, holding, feeding, and cleaning them. They’ve had a calming impact and have sparked new interactions and friendships between residents.”

Wellbeing Coordinators Sam Ivanciute and Kay Baldcock have been looking after the new residents and have installed protected coops in the garden.

Sam said: “We’ve loved having the chicks so much that we’ve decided to keep them. Kay and I have also been running a gardening project with the residents so adding coops to the garden is a great natural addition.

“It’s been fantastic to see the residents getting involved with their care and I’ve no shortage of volunteers to help us maintain their new home and collect the eggs.”

Kay added: “Much like the gardening project, the hens will encourage residents to keep active, and having set jobs gives them a sense of role and responsibility which is lovely to see.”

PAUL'S GARDEN PROJECT!

One of resident's, Paul, at our Barleycroft Care Home in Romford, always loves getting involved around the home and is especially known for his 'Green Fingers'.

Led by our Wellbeing Team, Paul's Garden Project was born, and he is now not only Head Gardener working alongside our Facilities Manager, but he also has a huge input into how the garden should be designed, so that all his fellow residents can enjoy a tranquil place, full of colour, texture and fragrance.

With his first plan of some raised flower trugs, our team supported Paul and off they all went to the local garden centre with him. Planters, seeds and flowers chosen, along with any tools he may need.

From assisting to loading and unloading the car with all the materials, to putting the planters together, using his skills he obtained in the building trade, Paul created two beautiful raised planters filled with colourful and cheerful plants.

Paul loves his creations and checks on the plants every day, ensuring they are watered and in good health. Through this project, he feels he has a purpose as well as the joy it brings him, promoting his wellbeing. We can't wait to see the garden grows with all his new ideas, along with him.

We had so much fun at the Huntingdon Carnival.

Our Home Manager Sylvia Duz from Cromwell House, was sprinkling the carnival magic of fun, bringing the spirit of laughter and joy to all who joined us.

With children and adults alike, crowns and masks were created and worn with pride.

And to remember the day and to capture the memory, a keepsake instant polaroid picture was given to them modelling their creation.

It was a day of making new friends and fun memories together with our local community.

A fantastic story to share from our Home Manager Kirsty Harris from Aarandale Court Care Home which has been published in the recent edition of the Care Home Magazine.

In Kirsty's words "I am beaming with pride. Ann loves her living purpose role as a receptionist and I am so happy as this shows how much and how all our residents should be valued and giving the chance to live life to the full".

A huge thank you to all that attended our Heron Hill Care Home Golf Charity Day, in harmony with Silverdale Golf Club, to raise funds for two amazing local dementia charities during Dementia Awareness Week, South Lakes Dementia Community and Dignity in Dementia.

With 20 teams in attendance we raised a total of £2241.00 and with the sun shining through all day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves supporting these worthy causes.

A special shout out also to Silverdale Golf Club for hosting the event and to their amazing bar and kitchen staff, the food was fantastic.

Hooray we shout! Already for the Coronation Parade and Picnic with our Heron Hill Care residents already, with their flags a waving high, excitement and fun building as they join Heron Hill Primary Schools KS2 for their Coronation parade and picnic! You look great guys.

At our Aaron Court Care Home it is going to be a right royal do! James our fantastic chef and his team have are preparing a wonderful luncheon for our residents, families and friends to enjoy and celebrate in style with a Kings Choice Menu. All of course enjoyed with a glass or two of fizz.

What a lovely event this will be.

With so much excitement in the air, Abbey Healthcare Care Homes have so much planned to being part of their communities, joining in on the local festivities of the forthcoming coronation.

We start with our amazing residents from Cromwell House and Primrose Hill Care Home who loved, taking part in decorating a solider and crown as part of Huntingdon in Bloom coronation celebrations.

The solider's will be standing to attention all summer in the Huntingdon Market Square and high street, with the crowns at St Benedicts Court until June.

Fabulous being part of and creating our solider's to be part of this display.
