Dr Roz Halari, Clinical Psychologist at The Soke, wrote an article for Edge journal focusing on autism within the workplace and the ways in which it can benefit professional leadership. Read on, as she guides us through four key points on how employers can support colleagues with autism.
.................................................................................
People with autism can be an enormous asset to an organisation, as they often have the ability to hyper-focus, and unparalleled skills in analysing data and problem solving. They also tend to take a direct approach to communication, and are extremely productive when it comes to their work. They enjoy structure and routine, have a strong understanding of what’s right and wrong, and often give 110% to the job. People with autism can make exceptional leaders in business, thanks to the clarity of their communication, their tendency to take a solution-focused approach, their high levels of concentration, their strong attention to detail , and their exceptional productivity.
While they have many strong traits, the truth is that people with autism often face discrimination in the workplace that prevents them from realising their leadership potential. So, how can their employers support them to succeed?
* Check in regularly: Make sure they are not feeling overwhelmed or suffer from burnout
* Communicate clearly: Favour a direct approach and avoid nuance
* Accommodate sensory adjustments: Allocate a desk in a quiet space and don’t pressurise employees to participate in activities outside of work
* Adopt a tailored approach: Take the time to understand their individual conditions..................................................................................
