How does your experience growing up and struggling with mental health as a teenager help you help others?

"My own experience growing up and dealing with mental health challenges helps me to understand just how complex and different each teenager's journey can be. Each young person we work with faces their own unique challenges - whether that's sensory sensitivities, executive functioning difficulties, social struggles, or mental health concerns. Our role is to really take the time to understand each individual’s needs and figure out how we can best support them in a way that’s meaningful and effective."

When should we start talking to teens about drugs and alcohol?
Sooner than most people think.

Recent UK reports show children as young as 12 are not only using ketamine—but in some cases, selling it at school.

Police say it's "as easy to get as a packet of crisps."

Many parents worry that talking too early might spark curiosity—but research shows the opposite.
Open, ✨age-appropriate✨ conversations are linked to lower rates of substance use in teens.

✅ Parent tip:
It is important to start the conversation early, with simple, ⚠️ age-appropriate ⚠️ chat.

Keep it going, as children grow, so should the depth of the discussion.
Use everyday moments, such as news stories or social media trends, to help launch meaningful, fact-based dialogue.

Ask questions like, “What do you know about this?” and explain real risks like mental health issues, addiction, and legal consequences.

Start small. Start young. And keep it going.

🎥 Watch this video to discover why early conversations matter—and how to start them confidently.
The goal isn’t to scare them. It’s to prepare them.

🔁 Share this with a parent who might need it.

🧠 How can undiagnosed neurodiversity impact mental health?

Psychologist Dr Monica Cain highlights that undiagnosed neurodiversity can be a precursor to mental health challenges.

Why?
Many societal systems don't take particular needs into account. This can lead individuals, especially young people, to feel "abnormal" when they find tasks others deem easy to be challenging. As a result, they may mask their difficulties, exacerbating mental health issues.

How to speak to your teenager if you think they are using drugs or drinking a lot?

💬 Lead with love and clarity. Start by reminding your child that you're here because you love them, not to judge, but to support.

🧠 Know your "why." Keep your goals in mind: connection, understanding, and safety.

👂 Stay open. Approach the conversation with curiosity, not assumptions. Pause. Breathe. Avoid reacting on impulse.

💡 Dig deeper. Gently ask: Is there something else you're struggling with? What do you need right now?

🤝 Be mindful of body language. If they're sitting, sit too. Uncross your arms. Avoid pointing fingers, literally and figuratively.

🛑 Set boundaries with compassion. Boundaries help protect, not punish.

🌀 Take breaks when needed. It’s okay to step away, reflect, and come back when emotions settle. Healing takes time for both of you.

📞 Don't go it alone. Support is available for parents and young people. Seeking help is a strength, not a failure.

💗 Every young person’s journey is different. So is their path to recovery.
