Getting help

If you think your child may have dyslexia, the first step is to speak to their teacher or their school's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) about your concerns.

They may be able to offer additional support to help your child if necessary.

If your child continues to have problems despite extra support, you or the school may want to consider requesting a more in-depth assessment from a specialist dyslexia teacher or an educational psychologist.

This can be arranged through the school, or you can request a private assessment by contacting:

an educational psychologist directly (you can find a directory of chartered psychologists on the British Psychological Society's website)

a voluntary organisation that can arrange an assessment, such as a local dyslexia association

Adults who wish to be assessed for dyslexia should contact a local or national dyslexia association for advice.

Dyslexia can come with its challenges. Spelling mistakes, struggling to read or write, mixing up directions and so many more challenges.

But just because something is challenging it does not mean we cannot achieve it.

We just have to change the way we think about things.
We have to think of new ideas and new solutions.

What are the signs of dyslexia?

Signs of dyslexia usually become apparent when a child starts school and begins to focus more on learning how to read and write.
A person with dyslexia may:

read and write very slowly

confuse the order of letters in words

put letters the wrong way round (such as writing "b" instead of "d")

have poor or inconsistent spelling

understand information when told verbally, but have difficulty with information that's written down

find it hard to carry out a sequence of directions

struggle with planning and organisation

But people with dyslexia often have good skills in other areas, such as creative thinking and problem solving.

Everyone has their unique ways of learning. Whether that be visually, through sound, through doing, through reading and writing it is so important to find out what is your learning preference and how you learn best.

Once you know this then a support plan can be put in place to ensure you are being taught in the best style for you possible, so that you can absorb as much information as possible.

Individuals with Dyslexia, how do you learn best?

It is estimated around 1 in 10 people have Dyslexia (NHS, 2020). Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which affects individuals in a variety of different ways specifically in reading and writing.

It can be hard especially when the right support is not in place but there is support out there and there are people here to help.

You are all doing amazing!

I am very happy to announce that Dyslexia Care Foundation Non-Profit Organisation (www.dyslexiacare.org) will be offering free Reviews for individuals living with Dyslexia to support them in their search.

We have formed a Partnership with an organisation called Leos Consultancy (www.leosconsultancy.com) in order to get this service up and running.

💫 It's estimated up to 1 in every 10 people in the UK has some degree of dyslexia ( 2020).

💫 If anyone reading this post is living with or knows of anyone who would benefit from this type of service completely free of charge.

I would love to hear from other Non Profit Organisations which have applied for Grants/Fundings/Partnerships/Sponsorships to get them started lifting their organisations off the ground.

We are looking forward to kicking Dyslexia off the ground and supporting as many people as possible, however need some advice on how we can raise funding to turn our plans into reality.

Please do like /share/comment to reach a wider audience.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
